HMRC Scam Alert

A Sutton resident has reported a scam phone call ostensibly from HMRC.

The resident was told by the caller that there was an unpaid tax bill and that failure to pay would result in imprisonment. The resident was instructed to “Press 1”.

Our resident had presence of mind not only to realise that this was a scam call but also to make a note of the callers number which was “0300 2001500”.

Whilst we are not sure if this scam is being targeted on a local basis from a list of local contacts our members should be wary of approaches for money over the phone. HMRC and other official bodies do not make demands for money in this manner. If in doubt terminate the call and if possible make a note of the callers number and remember to share your experience with the Sutton Neighbourhood Watch (nwa@suttoncumlound.net), and / or Action Fraud, so that all are made aware.

If you have a neighbour who does not have internet access please share our alert messages with them. By talking about these issues fewer people are likely to be stung by these rather nasty and intrusive phonecalls.
