SUTTON AND BARNBY MOOR W.I.: When the ladies of the local Women’s Institute held their meeting at 7:15pm on Wednesday 17th July 2019 in Sutton Village Hall. The speaker was Steve Short who told the membership the story of Jasper Maskelyne, the War Magician whose efforts helped influence the outcome of WW2, putting his knowledge and use of camouflage into practice, just as a magician would use sleight of hand and eye contact to make audiences believe what they were seeing was real and genuine, Jasper used similar practices to fool the enemy on various occasions during conflicts of the war. Steve, on the night also amused the ladies with several tricks and anecdotes during his performance and left the group amazed and mystified as to how they were done with the audience in close proximity, some even helping the maestro on the night.
The entertainer, who has appeared on Television in series such as Heartbeat and Coronation Street, has covered a wide variety of topics and talks in detail of the history of a well known fifties favourite magician David Nixon, funny man Norman Wisdom being another. Tales of the late Tommy Cooper and even stories of Morcambe and Wise are part of this talented mans varied and most interesting repertoire. Well worth a second visit.
