February 2012

Electrical work is well under-way, the new boiler is up and running and the re-positioning of radiators in the hall appears to be making the hall warmer than it has been for some time. With the new ceiling lights in position this now leaves the way clear for the boarding over of the overhead structure forming the framework for the lowered ceiling. and the provision of insulation materials before the overhead works is completed.

Further updates will follow as progress is made.

If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions please contact chair@suttonvillagehall.net, or call our Village Hall Central number: 07092 985 831

January 2012

Work has started internally with the fitting of tie-bars and roof cavity supports where needed.

Timbers and the new beams for use in the support frame for the lowered ceiling are now being installed. As this work progresses, new electrical and plumbing fittings will also be installed and connections will take place on completion of the lowered ceiling. The roof will be fully insulated to current standards which should hopefully make for a warmer experience and drastically cut heating bills.

December 2011

The old roof tiles and felting has been removed and with only a little remedial work required, and after inspection the new felt and lathes were applied. On completion of this, the new roof tiles, which arrived in early December, were then put in place and the works were completed on within a few days, fortunately just before a heavy downpour. Contractors on site took the opportunity to check the completed works and were pleased to report that no leaks were found.

The brickwork on the front and side of the hall has been dressed and upgraded where necessary and re-pointing of this area has now been completed.

Soffitts and facia boards are now fitted, and guttering installed. All weathered, or perished brickwork has been removed and replaced.

A general clean up around the perimeter of the hall has also taken place.

The One Show – TV Opportunity

Information sent on behalf of Neighbourhood and Home Watch Network

www.ourwatch.org.uk

Message sent on behalf of Declan Healy – BBC One Show

TV opportunity!

About me

I’m a director with the BBC’s “The One Show”, and I’m making a film about domestic CCTV cameras. I’ve been looking for someone who has installed the cameras in their home and has actually caught someone on the cameras committing a crime. Did someone steal from a house and were caught on camera? Were they caught thanks to the footage, or are they still at large? It would be good to talk to the people who installed the CCTV cameras about their experience of using them and whether they think it was effective.

The request

Essentially, I would like to talk to people who have used domestic CCTV cameras and have actually caught a crime taking place with those cameras. I understand that it would be inappropriate for you to give me the details of people who have been affected by a crime like this, but if you could forward my email on to those people then they can contact me if they wish. Initially, I’d like to chat to them over the phone with a view to potentially interviewing them on camera about their case. I’m based in Cardiff, but am happy to film anywhere in the country.

I’d need to be able to see the CCTV footage to evaluate the case, and it would be with a view to using the footage in the film. I’d also want to interview the people who were the victims so that they could a) tell me the story about what happened, and b) reflected on how useful the CCTV cameras have been. For various reasons, this film needs to be about people who have cameras installed in their home – a place of work or commercial property isn’t what I’m looking for; this film is about everyday people trying to protect their home.

Deadline

In terms of time scale, in an ideal world I would be filming an interview with people within the next 2 weeks. I realise that this is quite a short timescale, so I’d really appreciate it if you could forward this on to anyone that you think can help as soon as possible. If that timescale isn’t achievable, then it’s not the end of the world! But it would be nice to film this sooner rather than later.

I hope that this is clear – anyone should feel free to contact me by email or on the number below at any time if you have any questions, or think you can help. Many thanks in advance for any time and help you may be able to give.

Please note that a number of honours and awards at different levels are now open for nominations, ranging from Knight to Dame Grand Cross to the British Empire Medal.

The honours system recognises people of outstanding merit, and those who have committed themselves to service to the nation.

The Network would specifically like to invite nominations from under-represented individuals, such as black and ethnic minorities, women, who have made significant contributions to their local community. Hard to reach communities are also encouraged to take part, specifically nominations from the North East and North West.

Influence policing in your area at the touch of a button

Did you know you can go online to influence how we police where you live?

We are asking the people of Nottinghamshire to complete a web-based version of our Neighbourhood Priority Survey.

In the past, we asked people to tell us what matters to them and what they want police to focus on in their area by completing a paper-based survey.

Now, the online survey allows everyone in Nottinghamshire with access to the internet to tell us what issues are affecting them, at a time and place convenient to them.

The results are then used when Neighbourhood Policing Teams are consulting with the community on what the policing priorities should be for each area every three months.

Completed anonymously, the survey asks you to explain what concerns you have about criminal activity where you live. It asks for information about a range of concerns, including antisocial behaviour, speeding, street drinking, nuisance vehicles and other criminal activity.

You can give more information about the offences being committed and the days and times incidents are happening. You can also pinpoint exactly where the problems are, with a marker on a map.

The information you enter into the site will help your local beat team decide which issues are most important to people in your area and what three things they should tackle over the next three months.

To have your say on policing in your area visit www.neighbourhoodprioritysurvey.co.uk

If you know someone who hasn’t got access to the internet, but would like to complete a survey, paper-based surveys can be obtained from your local beat team. Call 101 to speak to them or visit www.nottinghamshire.police.uk and click on Your Local Police to find out who your beat team are.

Scam E-mail Warning

Information sent on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council Trading Standards

We have received information about an e-mail scam, which was targeted at a resident in Nottinghamshire.

The e-mail appeared to have been sent by someone they knew. It had a link to another website that when clicked on led to a site claiming they had won a prize and asked for their password details for their e-mail account. However, it then hacked into their e-mail account and sent a similar e-mail to the one they had originally received to all of their e-mail contacts.

Anyone receiving this, or similar emails, should delete them, not open any links and certainly not provide any personal information. If you have been a victim of this, or any type of fraud then please report it to Action Fraud at www.actionfraud.org.uk/ or on 0300 123 2040

For more information on how to protect yourself from this type of threat, please visit the www.getsafeonline.org/ website.

Message sent by David Brocklebank (Nottinghamshire County Council Trading Standards, Trading Standards Officer, Nottinghamshire)

Scams warning for Internet users

Information sent on behalf of Nottinghamshire Police

www.neighbourhoodprioritysurvey.co.uk/

Police have asked computer users in Nottinghamshire to be on their guard after a number of suspected internet frauds were reported to the force.

Nottinghamshire Police have received a number of calls in relation to an internet scam where members of the public receive an online pop-up message claiming to be from Strathclyde Police or the Metropolitan Police.

The message states that the individual’s computer has been locked by police, and that they will need to call a given number or pay a fine online for viewing inappropriate or illegal content online.

The computer screen locks in most cases.

Samantha Hancock, of Nottinghamshire Police’s Pre-Crime Unit, said: “Various police forces across the UK have informed the public that this is an internet scam and has absolutely nothing to do with them.

“The police would like to make it clear that they would never ask the public for money under such circumstances and urge anyone who receives the pop-up to not to follow the payment instructions or call the number given. “They should definitely not pay any money or divulge personal details.”

Action Fraud and the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau are aware of the scam and are in the process of updating their websites with the correct information.

If you receive such a message on your computer, rest assured that no one has discovered any illegal material on your system.

Removal of the virus needs to be done with care using the operating system’s ‘Safe Mode’ as an incorrect removal could easily lead to your computer becoming unusable and all your data and files being lost.

If you do not have specialised knowledge in this area, you are advised to seek professional advice in unlocking the computer and removing any associated virus.

In a separate scam reported in the county, a man paid £260 to secure a £1,500 loan after receiving an unsolicited telephone call from a company who knew he had been researching loans on the internet.

He never received the loan, and was verbally abused when he rang the company to enquire about it.

In several other cases, PC owners have been contacted by callers claiming to represent software companies, including Microsoft.

The callers have offered to install security packages on the computer and have been able to access the computer remotely.

The packages were installed, but it is not clear whether they are genuine packages or ‘trojans’ – computer programmes which contain viruses or damaging malware.

In all three cases, the computer owner was asked to make payment at shops with a Paypoint or Ukash facility or at a Western Union money transfer shop. Another similarity was that the callers all had telephone numbers with 0203 dialling codes.

Samantha Hancock added: “There is a real warning here about internet security. We all know that when we go online our security is compromised to a certain degree, but you should always exercise caution if you receive a cold call from someone who appears to know exactly what you have been searching for.

“There is always a risk in accepting offers from cold callers in any event. It is also highly unusual for companies to request payment in this way. Certainly, in the case of the loan, we know that this has proven to be a fraud.

“There is nothing illegal about charging a fee to install a computer security package for someone or to resolve any other problem, as long as the service offered is legitimately provided. However, many genuine security packages can be easily downloaded free of charge.

“There are undoubtedly individuals around the world who have identified this as a potential cash-generating enterprise, but it is difficult to know whether they can be relied upon to do what they offer.

“If you are also suspicious that the caller is not the person they purport to be, it should sound alarm bells. Do not reveal personal financial information to anyone whose identity you cannot verify and trust. Loans should only be taken out with reputable, recognised companies.”

If anyone has any information about a similar incident, they should telephone Nottinghamshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
