Telephone
All landline telephone access is controlled by BT. There is no cable (fibre-optic) in the village, and probably won’t be for some years due to the small population and distance from the nearest exchange in Retford.
The exchange was upgraded some years ago which allowed a version of broadband access. This can now be provided by suppliers other than BT as part of the “unbundling” process.
In reality, due to the poor quality of the copper cable between the village and the exchange at Retford, we’re unlikely to get anywhere near the speeds advertised by any provider. So, if you’re looking for a broadband provider make sure you get a line test from them before signing up.
You can get a broadband speed test here.
Ofcom
Ofcom is the communications regulator. They regulate the TV and radio sectors, fixed line telecoms and mobiles, plus the airwaves over which wireless devices operate.
Nuisance Calls
Nuisance calls can include unwanted sales and marketing calls, abusive or threatening calls or silent calls.
Here are some tips from Ofcom on how to avoid them and what to do if you receive them.
Telephone Preference Service
The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is a free service. It is the official central opt out register on which you can record your preference not to receive unsolicited sales or marketing calls.
It is a legal requirement that all organisations (including charities, voluntary organisations and political parties) do not make such calls to numbers registered on the TPS unless they have your consent to do so.
