NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH: The local association has received the following information:

Thieves stole riding equipment, a diesel generator, a lawnmower and strimmer after cutting the lock on a shipping container. Concrete statues were also taken from the field in wood lane, Gringley on the Hill during the break-in.

Police are investigating the incident which happened during the early hours of the morning

Five saddles, six bridles, nine horse rugs, four riding hats, and one child’s body protector were all snatched from the container. Four distinctive head collars, embroidered with the names Vice Versa, George, Billy and Hercules were also taken.

The generator, petrol lawnmower and petrol strimmer had also been kept inside the container. Two concrete statues, one of a horse and cart and the other of an Easter basket had been on display outside the stables.

Police said “it appears that bolt cutters were used to break the lock on the shipping container and were also used to remove the hinges from an entrance gate to the field.

Further information states: Forget gold and silver, lead and copper are the new precious metals to criminals. As well as risking peoples lives, metal theft costs the country hundreds of thousands of pounds each year. It costs the nation £770 million.

In a bid to clamp down on this rising crime trend, Notts Police and its partners have launched an operation dedicated to targeting thieves who steal metal from houses, churches, railway lines, telecommunications masts and utilities sites.

This in turn, causes disruption to vital services, such as heating and water supplies as well as undermining the integrity of infrastructures and causing fire risks.

Chief Inspector Sean Anderson said “Crime such as burglary and auto-crime may be falling, but intelligence points to a number of these offenders switching to stealing lead, copper and scrap metals because there is such good money in it.

These people don’t care about anyone but themselves and we need the publics help to catch them.

Fire: Two fire appliances were in attendance at an incident on Station Rd. in the village on Friday afternoon at approximately 3:00pm. The incident occurred after the passing of a train with a steam engine fore and aft over Sutton level crossing, heading in a southerly direction. A local resident reminiscing over the steam era noticed as soon as the train had gone past, that the grass on the railway side had caught fire and was rapidly spreading. The Fire Brigade was then called.
