There has been an increase of suspicious incidents involving Hawkers selling yellow dusters and household wares in the Newark and Balderton areas. Householders are being ‘visited by male persons, introducing themselves as ‘Ex-Offenders’ recently released from prisons, detention centres etc. and proffering dusters, ironing board covers and other goods from bags on the doorstep, all at inflated prices.

This MO (method of operation) has also been seen in the Loughborough and Leicester area where there has been an increase in Burglary Dwelling Offences. Suspects are believed to originate from the Nottingham City area and, in incidents in Loughborough, the sellers visits have been from persons of Asian origin.

Home-owners receiving visits from such persons are advised NOT to purchase items from these sellers. Neighbourhood Watch members are asked to note the name and date of birth of any seller who produces an ‘identity card’ with a photograph. They are also asked to note description of clothing and any bags being carried by the sellers, and inform Police of the incident.

Please note that the sellers should be in possession of a Police issued Pedlar’s Certificate, the identity card offered is NOT the pedlar’s certificate.
