Some of the children from Sutton cum Lound C of E attended and entertained their audience with an array of popular songs. Strawberry Teas were served to customers as they sat and overlooked the lake whilst listening to live music by local guitarist Marcus. A Pony and trap was at hand to take the children around the grounds before they spent their pennies on an array of different games and competitions. Tom acted as tour guide on the trips as the group visited the many war graves scattered all over the areas known as Flanders Fields.
Based in Ypres, trips were organised on a daily basis, with the group returning back to their hotel around 5pm daily in readiness to take in the “Last Post” ceremony carried out every evening at 8pm at the well known Menin Gate. The Menin Gate is the British and Commonwealth memorial to the missing in the battlefield area In Belgium Flanders, where over 54,000 from UK and Commonwealth forces fell in Ypres Salient before August 1917 and who have no known grave.
