Operation Metallica

Information sent on behalf of Nottinghamshire Police

Police and partner Agencies were out in force on Tuesday 28th August in a metal theft operation targeting vehicles carrying metal and scrap.

As a result, in partnership with Customs & Excise, the Environment Agency, VOSA (Vehicle and Operator Services Agency), Bassetlaw District Council’s Antisocial Behaviour Team and other local Government departments, 36 vehicles from across Worksop were led to a checkpoint in Manton Wood and numerous others were stopped on the road side.

Five drivers were reported for summons, one for having no licence. Two motorists had their vehicles seized, one for lack of insurance and the other for no tax. Nineteen people were fined, most for not wearing their seatbelts, and one received points as well as a fine for the use of a mobile phone while driving.

Eight vehicles were deemed unroadworthy and their owners instructed to repair them before returning to the roads. Three drivers of vehicles carrying scrap received fines for lack of a waste carrying license or waste transfer notice.

Metal theft and handling in Nottinghamshire is reducing thanks to the tough stance taken by officers, close partnership working with Government and industry, and cooperation from scrap metal dealers to reduce the market for stolen metal.

Road checks like the one this week not only pick up those flouting metal related laws, but also others who put their own lives and those of other road users on the line.

Anyone with information regarding suspected metal thefts can contact the Police on 101 or use the Crimestoppers number of 0800 555 111 to pass information anonymously.
