Explosion risk following metal theft

Police have issued a safety warning to thieves who stole a trailer full of cast magnesium car parts.
The trailer, which was not connected to a cab, was parked at an industrial estate in Hamilton Road, Sutton-in-Ashfield, overnight between Sunday and Monday (23 and 24 September 2012).
The thieves would have needed their own cab to connect to the trailer, which together with the cargo would weigh around 2 tons, and drive it from the site.
PC Shaun Healy said: ”Magnesium is a very unstable and flammable metal. If it is interfered with or comes into contact with a spark or open flame there is the chance it could explode and cause extensive damage and injury to anyone in the vicinity.
“If anyone knows the whereabouts of the trailer please do not approach it. Call us immediately.”
The trailer is described as a blue curtain-sided trailer, with ‘Nelson Distribution’ written on the side. It is 13 metres long and nearly 5 metres high.
Witnesses to the theft or anyone who knows the whereabouts of the stolen trailer or metal should contact Nottinghamshire Police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
