Tax Rebate Scam

Nottinghamshire Police would like to make you aware of a phone call received by a resident of Nottinghamshire on 6th September 2012.
The resident received a phone call on their home telephone which would appear to be an attempt to deceive them into paying money in order to receive a tax refund.
The caller was an Asian sounding male who claimed to be calling from the British Council in Manchester.
The caller appeared to have various personal details relating to the resident including their bank and date of birth. The resident was advised to withdraw £400.00 in two cash point transactions and pay these into Ukash at a Paypoint.
The resident became suspicious and did not do as the caller requested and reported the information to their local Police.
There are various telephone scams occurring at the moment relating to Ukash. Ukash is a genuine company which is used to pay for goods and services online but only with the approved merchants listed on their web site.
Nottinghamshire Police are urging people not to be fooled by cold callers approaching by telephone and informing of money they are entitled to. There is advice on the Ukash website stating that voucher codes should only be purchased to pay approved online merchants. Never give the voucher codes/reference numbers to anyone to secure a refund, organise loans or purchase items from non approved Ukash merchants on-line.
