Elderly residents targeted

Residents are being warned against rogue traders operating in the Worksop area.
Recently a pensioner has had cheques removed from a cheque book and later presented for large amounts without the knowledge of the account holder. The incident came to light following suspicions raised by friends and family who have since managed to cancel some of the missing cheques.
It is suspected that rogue traders have targeted the pensioner, preying on the vulnerability that often comes with old age. Although maintenance work had been agreed with a legitimate source rogue traders have intervened and managed to confuse the victim.
Darren Surgey, of the Pre-Crime Unit, said: “The best way to ensure you are dealing with a legitimate company is to visit the www.trustatrader.com or www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk websites. Here businesses have registered their services and have been vetted, so you can be sure you are receiving a lawful service.
“Nevertheless, always check the ID of those who are providing you with a service and confirm this by looking up the number of the company they claim to be working for in the phone book and calling them to verify. Do not call the number on the ID or business card.
“You should also always get several quotes before agreeing to someone carrying out work.
“People should look out for their elderly relatives or neighbours. If you think they may be vulnerable to this kind of exploitation, call it in.”
