Nottinghamshire experienced its lowest single month crime figures for at least a decade in September.

It follows confirmation that the county crime rate at its lowest level for 37 years.

The Force’s own audited figures show that in September there were 5,396 recorded crimes, almost 1,000 fewer offences compared with September 2011.

Domestic burglary fell by 18 per cent to 330 offences, sexual offences fell by 22.3 per cent from 94 crimes last September to 73 this year and robbery fell 35.7 per cent from 70 to 45 offences. Vehicle crime was down 22.3 per cent from 642 to 499.

Antisocial behaviour across the county was down 39.4 per cent with 3,098 reported incidents against the 5,113 in the previous September. That was in spite of the fact that calls to the force’s control room, which handles emergency and non-emergency calls, increased from 48,192 in September last year to 49,340 in September 2012.

It followed an impressive set of figures for August, when there were 5,616 offences, down 18.1 per cent on August 2011, equating to 1,246 fewer victims of crime than 12 months ago.

Vehicle crime reduced by 24 per cent to 493 offences compared with August last year. Domestic burglary fell by 6 per cent to 341 offences, and robbery was down by 22 per cent to 66 offences.

The figures have been released on the day the Office for National Statistics has confirmed that the crime rate in Nottinghamshire is now below the national average. There were 68 recorded crimes per 1,000 people in the county in the three months from April to June. The national average for the 43 forces of England and Wales is 70 crimes per 1,000.

The figures also show crime in Nottinghamshire fell by 10 per cent in the 12 months to 30 June to a total of 73,946 recorded offences.

Assistant Chief Constable Paul Broadbent said: “To have a crime rate below the national average is a significant milestone for Nottinghamshire. The police, our partners and the public had, together, already reduced crime to its lowest level in 35 years.

“However, what the crime rate tells us is how likely people who live, work and spend their leisure time in Nottinghamshire are to fall victim to crime.

“That risk has reduced, and that is important for many reasons, not just safety. Quality of life, financial investment, tourism and the environment all improve as a result.

“They brings real benefits for everyone in Nottinghamshire, whether they have been directly affected by crime or not, and, as the statistics tell us, those who have been victims are becoming, on average, fewer and farther between.

“However, every force is only as good as the performance it delivers each and every day, and we are showing, as August and September’s figures demonstrate, that our performance is continuing to drive down crime to levels not seen for almost four decades.

“But we know how easily the figures can creep back up again if we take our eye off the ball. For our part, we utterly refuse to be complacent, and I urge the public to play its part by continuing to report crime, antisocial behaviour and suspicious activity.”

You can report crime and suspicious activity by telephoning Nottinghamshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
