Police are urging people to take extra care if travelling.
Temperatures are forecast to remain below freezing, which will have an impact on road conditions. Drivers are advised to exercise caution, plan ahead and leave plenty of time for their journeys.
Drive slowly, avoid sharp braking and acceleration, use the highest gear possible to avoid wheel spin while maintaining a steady speed and allow extra space to stop – it can take ten times longer to stop in icy conditions than on a dry road.
If your vehicle suddenly skids, ease off the accelerator, but do not brake suddenly.
Motorists are reminded to ensure their vehicle has enough water, oil and fuel before setting out. Drivers should also store an ice scraper, de-icer, warm clothes, blanket and shovel in their vehicle.
A police spokesperson said: “Unfortunately thieves still operate in wintry weather and will take full advantage of any chance to steal a vehicle left with the engine on while it defrosts and the owner nips inside the house.
“Use de-icer or an ice scraper to clear windscreens and if you are leaving your vehicle, don’t leave keys in the ignition.”
