Next week we will begin recruiting 150 new police officers for Nottinghamshire.

It is the first time since 2010 that people new to the police have the opportunity to join more than 2,000 officers already working to make the streets of the county safer.

Applicants have two weeks to apply and as part of the recruitment drive, Nottinghamshire is hoping for a number of applications from under represented groups as well as transferees from other forces.

The role of a police officer is to maintain law and order, while offering a reassuring presence that helps to reduce the fear of crime in our county.

Duties include:

  • Providing an initial response to incidents, arresting suspects, searching person(s), premises and vehicles
  • Interviewing suspects, victims and witnesses
  • Preserving crime scenes
  • Presenting evidence in court
  • Gathering and using intelligence
  • This work can be very demanding and it requires a high level of integrity, initiative, intelligence and, to some degree, a good sense of humour.

PC Sarah Stables, 38, is a medic in the Police Support Unit, a group specially trained to deal with public order policing.

She said: “I had always wanted to be a police officer, since being at school, but I had a son when I was quite young and it wasn’t until nine years ago that I had the chance to apply and go through the training.

“I’ve never regretted it. It’s an amazing job and I’ve had some amazing experiences. I’ve trained as a medic and on one memorable job at Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station I saved someone’s life.

“Doors open and you gain some incredible skills and experiences. Being a single mum and joining later in life hasn’t stopped me and I would recommend anyone who thinks they have something to offer to consider applying.”

The decision to open recruitment was taken by Police and Crime Commissioner Paddy Tipping who is looking to increase numbers of police officers, PCSOs and police staff over the next four years.

Mr Tipping said that though crime has been falling in Nottinghamshire, it would not continue if resources continued to be cut and this is the reason why it is so important to recruit more police.

He said: “A big input over the next 12 months of 150 extra officers will lift morale, give visible presence on the street and I do think it will make a difference.”
