Do not fall for the latest con on Nottinghamshire’s roads.

A 90-year-old man was waiting for a bus in Farndon, Newark, on Friday 23 August 2013 when he was approached by a motorist.

The man, who was driving a small dark-coloured car, claimed he needed to get to London but had no petrol.

He offered him two watches, featuring price tags of £199, in return for money to buy fuel.

The elderly man, wanting to help, gave him £40.

On further inspection the watches were worth a small fraction of the purported value.

Inspector Andy Gan said: “This is one of a number of incidents of this kind in the last few weeks across Nottinghamshire. We just want to warn people to be wise to it so no one else falls victim to this man’s fictitious sob story.”

The man was white and spoke with a foreign accent. He was short, of stocky build with dark slicked back hair. He was wearing a shirt and tie.

If you have been approached by the man or have any information contact police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
