STREET LIGHTING: Villages participating in the November 2013 survey about street lighting and their thoughts about crime and safety in the area.
15,786 people responded to the survey, of which 22% of participants said that lighting had been switched off or dimmed in their area. Of those participants, 55.8% of the women and 38.8% of the men said that their community now feels less safe. When comparing the data by age, a higher number of younger respondents felt their safety was negatively affected. Asked how dimming or switching off lighting affects their behaviour, 40% of respondents considered going out less, 65% avoided unlit areas and 15% said they would take taxis rather than walk.
ST.BARTHOLOMEW’S CHURCH: On Sunday 9th February, Holy Communion will be held at the local church. The service starts at the usual time of 9:30am and everyone is welcome.
NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH: The committee met as scheduled on Wednesday 29th January and the following items came under discussion:
Police report:
- There were no incidents of crime reported in the village in December 2013 and one reported theft of a pedal cycle in Portland Place to date in January 2014.
- The graffiti which recently defaced two of the village signs (Lound Low Road and Sutton Lane) had been reported to the police but no perpetrator has been identified.
- There was no reported crime in the village in December 2013 and one burglary of a cycle in Portland Place to date in January 2014. However it was noted that there had been a sudden large increase in vehicle crime in the District much of it centering on the North Road in Ranskill – many vehicles were parked overnight without the doors being locked.
- Members of the Committee informed the PCSOs that speeding was getting worse in the Village. PCSO Aaron Stocks informed the Committee that last week speed cameras had been deployed at both ends of the Village, and that he would enquire of the number of resulting prosecutions. The secretary reported that the Parish Council had secured 4 or 5 residents to participate in Speedwatch and that training of the volunteers was anticipated in the near future.
- Further incidents reported, although not in the village, indicate that on Tuesday 28th January at 8:40am a JCB excavator was stolen from Daneshill Road Lound.
- In Barnby Moor a motorcycle was stolen between Thursday 23rd January and Saturday 25th January. It was a KTM 200 model bearing the registration mark NK55 FXB.
Police require assistance from the public to help them recover these vehicles.
AGM Matters: The Chairman informed the committee that the Village Hall had been booked for Thursday 15 May from 7.00pm for the group’s AGM which starts at 7.30pm

VILLAGE VENTURES: Ticket are selling well for the Village Ventures production : “HIM WITH HIS FOOT IN HIS MOUTH” A hilarious one-man show about saying the wrong thing. MEET THE NEIGHBOURS: On Tuesday 11th February is Meet the Neighbour’s day. This is the day friends and neighbours’ get together at the Village Hall and socialize over afternoon tea whilst catching up on all the latest news and views from in and around the area. Start the New Year off well by continuing your visits to the event.
Once again Joan Reiter and her team will be on hand to meet and greet friends old and new who continue to Meet the Neighbours on the first Tuesday of every month in the Village Hall. You are invited to join them for a cup and chatter. The event starts at 2:00pm and everybody is welcome.
BURNS SUPPER: When the twelfth Annual Burns Supper took place in the Village Hall on Saturday 25th January all sixty allocated places were filled. This popular event was once again deemed a success and raised the sum of £441 which is destined for Village Hall funds. Thanks to all who supported the event.
SUTTON GARDENING CLUB: The club met on Tuesday 4th February at 7:15pm in the Village Hall when Mr and Mrs Cocks of Taylor’s Clematis nursery Nr Doncaster delivered an illustrated talk entitled ‘Clematis through the seasons’. This was, as promised, an excellent evening provided by clematis experts with a national reputation. A further report will follow.
NETWORK RAIL: Network Rail carried out the essential improvement works scheduled to take place on Saturday 1st February between 10:00pm and Sunday 2nd February at 10:00 am at the Sutton/Barnby Moor level crossing. This meant the crossing being closed during the stated times.
New crossing gates have now been installed on the West side of the crossing, the Eastern side gates having been replaced late last year.
CRAFT CLASSES: Craft classes continue to operate in the Village Hall on the first Wednesday of each month. The next session is scheduled for Wednesday 5th March 2014 from 7:00pm until 9:30pm. The new sessions are £10 per visit.
