QUIZ NIGHT: A fun Quiz evening with supper will be held in the Village Hall on the evening of Friday 14th March at 7:30pm. Entry is £7.50 per head to include a Bangers and Mash supper.  A bar and raffle will be available on the night. This is a Sutton, Ranskill and Blyth branch event for Bassetlaw Conservative Association    All welcome.

POLICE COMMISSIONER: A local business man was so impressed with the feedback from the local Neighbourhood Watch Association and the prompt intervention of the local PCSO after a recent incident in the village he informed the Police and Crime Commissioner Paddy Tipping of his findings. He asked the Commissioner about the future funding of PCSO’s in Bassetlaw. The Commissioner was effusive in his praise and support of local policing. Whilst recognising that budgets were constraint Mr Tipping clearly advocates the role of the PCSO in the local community. There will be an increase in the number of PCSO’s throughout Nottinghamshire by around 75 in the coming year and the incumbent will also be looking to introduce Special Constables (warranted) into rural communities. The Commissioner spoke glowingly of the synergy to be gained from an effective collaboration of Neighbourhood Watch, PCSO’s and Police Officers. In summary, Commissioner Tipping clearly recognises the value in the role that our PCSO’s perform and although monies are tight the cost effectiveness of the role is well understood and the budget in this area will be protected.

ST.BARTHOLOMEW’S CHURCH: “A Family Service” will take place at the local church on Sunday 16th March. Please come along and bring the family.

The service starts at 9:30am and everyone is welcome.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE: When the ladies of the Sutton and Barnby Moor WI meet in Sutton Village Hall on Wednesday 19th March it will be the groups AGM. On this occasion a ballot for Committee, Financial report, Annual report and nominations and ballot for President will take place. A buffet supper will take place during the evening.

SUTTON GARDENING CLUB: The Club can report on the three very successful spring meetings. In January the fun annual Pub Quiz was held in the Gate Inn.  Thanks to John Jones for providing the quiz for the second year in a row.

In February Chris Cocks, of Taylor’s nationally acclaimed Clematis Nursery of Sutton near Doncaster, gave an inspirational illustrated talk which prompted a call to visit the nursery. This has now been organised for early afternoon of the 21 June and 18 members have paid their £5 which Taylor’s are to donate to charity. The programme finished with our very own Ron Beare who entertained us with his illustrated talk on Orchids and Carnivorous Plants in the Home and Garden. Superb photographs were expected and the audience of 20 was not disappointed.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH: Sheds and garages are targeted again. The village and the wider region have once again been targeted by shed/garage thieves – experience shows that padlocks are easily snapped off shed doors, and up and over metal garage doors are easy to force open. Items of current interest to thieves appear to be bicycles, small tools such as drills and hedge trimmers, and lawn mowers.

Three top tips:

  1. Protectively mark your valuable property with your name and postcode preferably using a visible property marking kit such as Cremark.
  2. Fit a wireless operated PIR Shed/garage alarm.
  3. Fit an additional and robust locking system on your garage door. If you need advice contact your neighbourhood watch coordinator or the secretary David Mowthorpe.
  4. If you are not a member keep in touch with your local NW Association by joining. It takes 2 minutes and it’s free and you don’t have to attend meetings or be on a committee – if you are on email simply send your name, address and phone number to djmow@siewndavid.plus.com
