RAILWAY CROSSING: Drivers and pedestrians using Station Road in the village will have noticed the boxes and cables on the road and the near-by cameras recently installed on both sides of the level crossing. The cables spanning the road are part of a survey with regards to the volume of traffic using Station Road and the effect of the delay often experienced when the crossing is closed. The cameras are recording continuously for ten days, gathering information and data in a joint scheme coordinated by the government and Railtrack. The same operation is currently taking place at Botany Bay crossing and also at Torworth.
The scheme will be carried out nationwide, covering all crossings and on completion will assist the authorities to decide which of the 500 crossing earmarked for closure will go ahead. Many of these will be the less frequently used crossings and manually operated types often located on single track/ branch lines / or commercial outlets leading to goods yards to await distribution to destinations various.
Concern has been raised by village residents and road users with regards to the delays experienced on the village exit / entrance road as the volume of rail traffic increases and the crossing is closed for longer and longer periods. The Parish Council has passed on these findings to the appropriate authorities concerned, for their perusal and actions, if any.
SUCCESS FOR LOCAL WOMEN’S INSTITUTE: When four members of the local branch of the W I. attended the Annual meeting held last Thursday, at the Royal Centre Nottingham, little did they know of the surprise that lay in store for them. Branch delegate Fiona Pagdin was asked to accept raffle prizes on behalf of two local members, Wendy Armstrong, who won a lovely food hamper, and Mavis Bradley who won a cup-cake recipe book and baking accessories. These were delivered last Thursday when the members returned from the city.
The Sutton and Barnby Moor branch were delighted to be declared winners of a federation bursary award, valued at £200, allocating a place at Denman College in Oxford , which will eventually be won by a member of the local group. What an eventful month for the local WI who have recently completed a project of knitting small but warm blankets for babies born at Bassetlaw Hospital under instruction of group art and craft mistress Val Moore. Those involved managed to produce blankets of various designs and colours, which were presented to head of baby care unit Frances Hubbard at Bassetlaw Maternity Wing. A worthy cause – Well done ladies!
The local group also featured in a photo shoot in the March edition of the W I magazine” Hornblower”. Congratulations to all concerned.
STEAMING AHEAD: On Saturday morning, 29th March a group of approximately 30 steam enthusiasts and interested parties gathered at Sutton level crossing from 10:30am onward to welcome the Steam engine “Sir Nigel Gresley”, one of the country’s most famous locomotives. The Gathering were establishing best vantage points and best camera angles, with some semi-professional snappers on hand, judging by the amount of equipment carried. After a short wait and after taking on water and passengers at Retford the train arrived at Sutton crossing much to the delight of the waiting crowd.
The A4 Pacific class was travelling between London and York and had not been seen on a main line for a few years, another reason for a big turnout. A bit of nostalgia and many memories for the older generation and a certainly a historic event for the youngsters present with the smell of steam lingering on, long after the train had gone.
