WOMEN’S INSTITUTE: The monthly meeting of the local WI took place on Wednesday 15th April in the Village Hall at the usual time of 7:15pm.

This was an open meeting with one or two visitors present on the night including a few male visitors who were brave enough to show and voice their thoughts and opinions. On this occasion Dr. Geoff Cutts addressed the gathering about the work of the R.N.L.I. and the problems they deal with, which are many and varied.

Dr.Cutts and his good lady are avid sailors and have sailed to many ports on the continent and were frequent visitors to the Irish coast, Channel Islands and the Scilly’s. They have personal experience of R.N.L.I. operations having in fact been rescued themselves making them more appreciative of the service. Those attending were informed of the lifeboats stations currently operating around the UK and were given an idea of the cost of running such a high profile organisation which is mainly self-funding and run on a daily basis by charitable donations. This very informative talk was accompanied by a slide show and video footage and highlighted the good works carried out by a mainly volunteer workforce.

Official business was dealt with in a swift and precise manner and member Fiona Pagdin gave the report on behalf of the delegates who attended the County Meeting in Nottingham. At the end of the evening a superb buffet supper was provided by the ladies of the local WI.

QUIZ NIGHT: Quiz nights continue to attract new teams to the Gate Inn on Sunday evenings, when they compete for the various prizes on offer.

Another quiz on Sunday at the usual starting time of 8:00pm.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH: The local Neighbourhood Watch Association met on Wednesday 29th April at the usual time of 2:30pm and a report will follow.

The association received the following information from the Neighbourhood alert system:

  • Online auction websites are being used by fraudsters to advertise vehicles for sale which do not exist. The fraudster advertises on an auction website and gets their victim to agree to purchase a vehicle, making sure that all correspondence is done via email.  The victim then receive emails which claim to be from genuine payment merchants or auction websites which state that the  money they have paid for the vehicle will be held in an ‘escrow account. The email indicates the money will be released to the seller, once the person has confirmed that they’re happy with the purchase. The email says that this will provide the person with ‘buyer protection’. In reality these emails are fraudulent, they don’t come from the named companies and the bank accounts are controlled by fraudsters. Online auction websites are being used by fraudsters to advertise vehicles for sale which do not exist and the bank accounts are controlled by fraudsters. Online auction websites are being used by fraudsters to advertise vehicles for sale which do not exist.
