Brian and Kathryn Seddons were once again the hosts for the coffee morning and assisted members of the Village Hall Committee in the running the rest of day’s events.

After an early set up of the stalls, the committee were on hand to welcome villagers and friends as they arrived to scrutinise the goods on offer on the day. These included:

  • A Sweet & Cuddly tombola
  • Home-made bakery stall
  • Jams and Preserves
  • Cards and Crafts stall
  • Seasonal Fruit and Veg
  • plus Christmas Accessories

The ladies of the local WI had a raffle with Hampers as prizes.

After a slow start, business began to pick up as people made their way around the stalls, many stopping for a coffee or tea to enjoy with their choice of cake.

The Annual Christmas draw took place at about 2:00pm, after a few words from Angela Close chair of the Village Hall Committee.

The WI ladies made their draw first with John Softley winning an excellent hamper; second prize was won by Brian Seddons.

Local resident John Jones announced the winners as the main draw took place, with most of the major prize winners living in the village.

  • First prize of £100 cash was won by local man Chris Sulley
  • Second prize of a luxury hamper was claimed by Angela Close
  • A Car Valet by Honda Garage Retford was won by Kylie Maule from Sutton
  • Nigel Johnson won a Samsung Tablet
  • and Frank Bradley won a Handy Cam in the Draw

All prizes were claimed or delivered on the day, which turned out to be very successful with a sum of £1,000.55 destined for Village Hall funds.

SURPRISE PRESENTATION: At the end of the Annual Christmas draw on Saturday 28th November, Brian and Kathryn Seddons called members of the Village Hall Committee together and presented the group with a cheque for £500 donated by the Mansfield Building Society.

NETWORK RAIL: Network Rail has appointed a Fencing Contractor (H.W. Martin Fencing Ltd) to carry out a programme of boundary fencing upgrade on routes where the fence is deemed inadequate, i. e. not preventing trespass or not meeting the required standards in accordance with Her Majesty’s Railway Inspectorate. (HMRI)

The fencing adjacent to properties on the Station Road area of the village has been risked-assessed by Network Rail’s Lineside Engineer, and as a result, has to be renewed. The work will involve the old fencing being removed (where possible) and replaced by new fencing. Some locations may require the removal of fly tipping/debris and possibly some cutting of vegetation along the fence-line before the new fence can be erected. This work is due to start on Saturday 12th December 2015 until Saturday 19th December 2015 and will be carried out during night time hours, 23:00 until 08:00.

Additional works will start on Saturday 9th January 2016 until Saturday 30th January 2016 and will be carried out during night time hours 23:00 until 08:00.

Every effort will be made to keep disturbance to an absolute minimum.

This comes after the Parish Council highlighted the dangers of broken fencing on Network Rail boundaries on two previous occasions.

SUTTON AND BARNBY MOOR W.I.: When the ladies of the local WI met on Wednesday 18th November in Sutton Village Hall at 7:15pm the Guest speaker for the evening was; Captain Alwyn Varley. The speaker addressed the members on the subject of “Life After the Life Guards” where he served for over 30 Years.

Unaccustomed to addressing a group of ladies only, the Captain made his peace before his talk after the group agreed to go easy on him. He told of his service in uniform and his connection with horses before and after retirement.

He related various incidents, with references to serving the Royal Family, judging at equestrian events, visiting horse shows and Gymkhanas in general.

A full and eventful life related from the heart, without the use of notes and thoroughly enjoyed by all present. On completion of the talk the customary vote of thanks was offered by Chris Abbott.
