ST.BARTHOLOMEW’S CHURCH: “A Family Service” will take place at the local church on Sunday 20th December. Please come along and bring the family.
The service starts at 9:30am and everyone is welcome.
With Christmas almost upon us please note that the ever popular “Crib Service” will take place on Thursday 24th December in church at 6:00pm.
Parishioners are invited to assemble in church again later in the evening at 11:30pm in preparation for the “Midnight Mass”. Come along and celebrate with family and friends.
On Christmas Day, “Holy Communion will take place at the earlier time of 9:00am.
SUTTON ART GROUP: Sutton Art Group meets every Friday morning in the Village Hall and from time to time we have a professional artist to provide new ideas and help members develop further. The Annual Art Group Exhibition held in the village hall on Saturday 21st November turned out to be a very popular event thanks to many visitors from the village and surrounding area. More than 200 paintings were on view and there was a bumper raffle too. Visitor numbers in the late morning and mid afternoon were substantial such that the raffle and refreshments raised £140 for Bassetlaw Hospice. Some said this was the best exhibition ever.
Christmas Celebrations. In December we had two Christmas parties. The first on the 4th December commenced with a painting of a Christmas song (song title drawn out of a hat) with Elaine Nash, followed by a very nice Christmas lunch at The Gate Inn. The second was a workshop by Liz Woodcock on the 18th December with a mid-session break for an in-house Christmas buffet. What a great way to end a great year for the Group.
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE: The local branch of the WI met as scheduled on Wednesday 16th in the Village Hall at the usual time of 7:15pm for their Christmas Party and a report will follow when to hand.
MEET THE NEIGHBOURS: Meet the Neighbours has continued to meet in The Gate Inn at 1:00pm on the second Tuesday of the month. The last meeting was the Christmas Special on 8th December when a packed restaurant and snug enjoyed a great festive buffet. This was followed by the Thorsby Colliery Brass Band leading a rendition of carols and Christmas songs.
It has been a spectacular year. At the first ever meeting (January 2015) at the new venue – The Gate Inn – thirty four neighbours attended. This rose steadily to the mid forties until the Christmas Special when sixty three friends and neighbours participated! Thank you to Joan Reiter and her team (Margaret Boreham, April Lavin, Lynne Tweed and Bruce Hodgson) for all their hard work and making the Meet the Neighbours in 2015 a spectacular success.
The next meeting is on Tuesday 12th January at 1:00pm. Most people appear to be thirsty and arrive 15 to 20 minutes early! We have an email list to keep participants and others informed of the meetings and the food to be served, etc. – if you wish to be added to the list then send an email to mtn@suttoncumlound.net or ring Joan Reiter on (01777) 702 137 – it is best to book for each meeting so that the chef prepares sufficient food to the budget – currently £5.00 per person. Most people book at the previous meeting, but if not please email or phone to keep us informed.
SUTTON GARDENING CLUB: The Club is going from strength to strength with membership now up to 40. Visitors from Sutton and Retford joined members for the two excellent autumn talks. The last one on 3rd November went off with a bang with Patrick Harding returning by popular demand to talk about ‘The Medicinal Properties of Plants’.
Coming up in the next three months we have the annual pub quiz and talks by two well known personalities. The quiz will give you the lift you need when all the excitement of Christmas and the New Year has rapidly faded away.
Non members will be made very welcome.
