A SERVICE OF CELEBRATION: A service to celebrate Mr Bryan Birkett’s 50 years of dedicated service to the church as Tower Captain will be held on Sunday 10th July at 3:00pm. The Right Reverend Tony Porter, Bishop of Sherwood, will be the guest preacher.

Bryan, as Tower Captain, has been responsible for the ringing of the church bells at Sutton which have played an important part in many weddings, funerals, special occasions and church services as well as being host to visiting ringers. Sutton bells are popular among ringers in the area who descend on St Bartholomew’s on a Wednesday evening for practice night to ring their melodies for the village’s pleasure.

Residents are invited to the special service which will be followed by light refreshments. Anyone wanting to attend are asked to contact the church to make them aware for catering purposes no later than 1st June.

They can be contacted by emailing: sutton-church@msn.com or by telephoning the Revd Sue Caddy on (01777) 703 322.

A collection has also been arranged and again anyone wishing to contribute can do so by contacting the church.

Further details available from Joan Reiter on (01777) 702 137.

The group continue to meet every Friday morning throughout the year in the Village Hall from 10:00am to 12:00noon.

GARDENING CLUB: On 3rd May the Gardening Club welcomed Gail Summerfield (Westshore Nurseries) and her husband John to address the meeting on ‘Pride in the Fall’. A surprise was in store as the group were treated to a double act with John taking the lead on the jokes. Gail was the lead speaker and inspired the audience to extend the ‘normal’ season in the garden and look for more colour and form in autumn gardens up to Christmas and beyond.

It was noted that Gail’s favourite shrub is the compact Abelian Grandiflora, that she is a proponent of leaving seed heads such as those of the Agapanthus throughout the winter, and keen on the Dahlia which can provide rich colours throughout the autumn if you continue to dead head. Her final message was that by keeping plants healthy they often keep going longer than we traditionally think they can.

If you missed the talk you missed lots of interesting and valuable information.

ANNUAL PARISH MEETING: The event organised by the Parish Council was held on Wednesday 4th May at 7:00pm in the Village Hall. Unlike previous years, various community groups were asked to provide static displays of what their activities are.

This was done with a great deal of success, the groups involved spending a lot of time and effort on the various displays relating to activities in the village and to update villagers on all the latest developments taking place. Some may affect the village directly, others may follow at a later date. The turnout on the night indicated that residents appear happy with the present situation.

The Chair of the Parish Council, Angela Close, was present to take on board any issues or concerns regarding the Village. Refreshments of wine and cheese nibbles were provided.
