ST.BARTHOLOMEW’S CHURCH: At the local church on Sunday 29th January, a “Candlemass Service” will take place. The English name, “Candlemas”, refers to the custom of blessing and distributing candles and carrying them in procession before the mass. The light of the candles is symbolic of Christ as the light of the world, to stick to tradition all the candles should be made of beeswax.
An ancient Scottish rhyme tells us:
If Candlemas day be dry and fair,
The half o’ winter to come and mair.
If Candlemas’s day be wet and foul.
The half o’ winter gane at Yule.
The English version is:
If Candlemas Day be fair and bright
Winter will have another fight
If Candlemas Day brings cloud and rain
Winter will not come again.
The service starts at 9:30am and everyone is welcome.
GATE INN: The local hostelry will be re-opening on Friday 27th January, under the Mitchell Graham Management Team Ltd. This is a special night at the Gate, as it is “Comedy Night” – a ticket only event. Unfortunately all tickets are sold at this time but the team will warmly welcome patrons on Saturday night, when it’s business as usual.
SPEED WATCH: The Speed Watch operation being run by the Parish Council in conjunction with the local Police is all ready to go live. A delay occurred earlier in the programme but this has now been overcome. A shortage of volunteers has arisen as previous volunteers plans have changed over the delay period. LAST CALL: A Ceilidh has been organised at Barnby Moor Village Hall on Saturday 28th January from 7:30pm with dancing to The Bracken Rigg Dance Band. Tickets are £10.00 each to include pie and peas. Bring our own alcohol and glasses. Tea and coffee available.

MOBILE LIBRARY: The dates for the Mobile Library visits to the village have been arranged and are as follows:
The van will visit the village on the 4th Monday of each month, commencing Monday 30th January and will stop at the following locations:
- Sutton cross roads (9:40am)
- 46 Station Road (10:00am)
- 22 Station Road (10:10am)
- Town Street (10:25am)
- Portland Meadows (10:45am)
- Portland Place Garages (10:55am)
Visiting days will be notified each month.
NETWORKRAIL: Networkrail give advance notice that the road and footpath at the level crossing on Station Road in the village will be closed from 21:00hrs on Saturday 4th February until 08:00hrs on Sunday 5th February. The closure is to allow for essential maintenance workings to take place. Networkrail apologise for any inconvenience caused.
CAR BOOT/TABLE TOP SALE: The next car boot and table top sale will take place at the Village Hall on Sunday 5th February 2017. The event starts at 10:00am for buyers but sellers may set up from 9:00am, and with free entry and free parking for buyers and refreshments available at the event it might well be worth a visit.

MEET THE NEIGHBOURS: Will patrons please note that the Neighbours group will now meet on the second Wednesday of each month at the Gate Inn Sutton (now under the new management team of MGM Ltd).
The next meeting will be on Wednesday 8th February at the usual time of 1:00pm, when chicken, chips and salad will be on the menu. The price will be £6.00 and will include tea, coffee and a sweet. The usual raffle will take place and a simple quiz will be attempted.
Please take note of the change of day – venue remains the same.
DEFIBRILLATOR: The first session took place on Thursday 19th January at the Village Hall at 7:00pm. A group of ten people were instructed on the use of the apparatus as well as CPR Methods and were invited to try a hands-on session under instruction. At the end of the lesson all present had carried out the manoeuvres to a satisfactory level and went home happy with their achievements on the night.
A second session is being arranged and those interested parties will be informed when a date is to hand.
