ST.BARTHOLOMEW’S CHURCH: “Morning Prayer” will take place at the local church on Sunday 5th February.
The service starts at 9:30am and everyone is welcome.
NETWORKRAIL: Networkrail give advance notice that the road and footpath at the level crossing on Station Road in the village will be closed from 21:00hrs on Saturday 4th February until 08:00hrs on Sunday 5th February. The closure is to allow for essential maintenance workings to take place. Networkrail apologise for any inconvenience caused.
CAR BOOT/TABLE TOP SALE: The next car boot and table top sale will take place at the Village Hall on Sunday 5th February 2017. The event starts at 10:00am for buyers but sellers may set up from 9:00am, and with free entry and free parking for buyers and refreshments available at the event it might well be worth a visit.

PIPES AND DRUMS: Retford and District Pipe Band still has a few vacancies for people who are interested in music. Tuition is available for people who wish to learn to play the bagpipes or drums! MEET THE NEIGHBOURS: Will patrons please note that the Neighbours group will now meet on the second Wednesday of each month at the Gate Inn Sutton (now under the new management team of MGM Ltd).
The next meeting will be on Wednesday 8th February at the usual time of 1:00pm, when chicken, chips and salad will be on the menu. The price will be £6.00 and will include tea, coffee and a sweet. The usual raffle will take place and a simple quiz will be attempted.
Please take note of the change of day – venue remains the same.
DANESHILL LAKES: The Friends of Daneshill Lakes local Nature Reserve at Torworth have organised two special events for February at the Reserve.
The first event on Friday 17th February, being in school half-term week and National Nest Box Week, the friends are inviting children to build their own bird nest box to take home. They can also learn how to identify all the ducks, geese and swans on the lake. Make bird feeders using cones to take home, take a look at the natural world through a microscope, and do much more family activities. There is a charge of £5.00 per nest box but otherwise this drop-in event is free! Hot drinks and home-made cakes will be on sale. The event takes place from 11:00am to 3:30pm and children must be accompanied by an adult.

BURNS SUPPER: When the fifteenth Annual Burns Supper took place in the Village Hall on Saturday 21st January, all sixty allocated places were filled. Once again the hall was tastefully decorated with the tartans of the many Scottish Clans. The Scottish Standard and the Saltire were also on display.
On arrival the guests were greeted with a skirl of the pipes, courtesy of local piper Andy Jones and fellow members of the Retford and District Pipe band and invited to join in a sherry reception, the ladies receiving a sprig of heather.
After a formal welcome and the usual health and safety brief, the gathering were asked to stand for the Selkirk Grace prior to the starters being served. This was conducted by Gail Bradley chief hunter for the evening, a task she has carried out for the full fifteen years
As the evening got underway, Chairman Frank Bradley gave the usual warm welcome and outlined the evenings programme, assisted by fellow Scot Graham Bonnyman.
Being the fifteenth year, a presentation was made to those who had completed the full term, and the only two people apart from the Burns team who achieved this were local couple Jim and Carole Head. They were duly presented with a floral tribute and a bottle of Whisky in appreciation of their support over the period. Congratulations both.
The members of the Burns team were also recognised and received presentations for their efforts over the years
The Haggis was piped in by resident piper Andy Jones and delivered to the top table by the catering staff where it was duly addressed by the chief hunter. Diners were asked to be upstanding to toast the Haggis, the piper and chef being offered the traditional libation. A few words about the Bard himself followed, outlining his greatness, if only for a few short years, but still remembered the world over today.
Diners continued to enjoy an excellent meal provided by Joan Goodman ( J G Catering). Certificates were presented those 8 people attending a Burns Supper for the first time here at Sutton. District Councillor Tracey Taylor and Husband Simon were amongst the 60 people supporting the event, with County Councillor Liz Yates and husband Terry also present. A grand raffle and more banter took place interrupted by an odd humorous tale or piece of prose. A short medley of tunes was played by the band of players and much appreciated by those present.
A final toast was proposed to the immortal memory of Robert Burns Scotland’s most famous Bard. Graham Bonnyman told more tales some true – others left to the imagination. The piper brought the evening to a close with an another offering from the Bard himself “Auld Lang Syne” which is sung at the end of events all over the world.
This brought a very enjoyable evening to a close¸ celebrating fifteen consecutive years of Burns nights here in Sutton.
The Burns supper once again proved to be a great success, mainly due to the efforts of the organisers and friends who gave of their time so freely to make it so. The format for the supper was arranged and coordinated by Sharon Dyson and the local Burns Team with support from the village hall committee and loyal friends.
The estimated sum of £500 raised by the event is destined for Village Hall funds.

VILLAGE HALL COMMITTEE MEETING: The committee met on Tuesday 24th January in the village when various topics came under discussion. These included finances, Fundraising, Events, Dickens Night, Quiz night and Burns night and Maintenance.
GATE INN: The local hostelry re-opened on Friday 27th January as planned, and the almost capacity crowd present were entertained by a well organised comedy evening, consisting of three comedians who soon had the audience on their side.
Further entertainment is planned as the pub goes from strength to strength under the new management team.
QUIZ NIGHT: The Quiz Night resumed at the newly managed Gate Inn last Sunday. The Quizmaster for the inaugural quiz was local man John Jones who delivered a quiz on people and events in 2016. The cash prize on offer was won by The Neighbours team with an impressive score of 37. Coincidentally it’s Chris Sulley’s quiz next week starting at 8:00pm. The Cards for “Play your cards right” were so unpredictable with lady luck playing tricks on this occasion, so no surprise that the £100 was not won and is up for grabs this Sunday. Don’t miss it.
