ST.BARTHOLOMEW’S CHURCH: A “Family Service” will take place at the local church on Sunday 19th February. Please come along and bring the family.
The service starts at 9:30am and everyone is welcome.
LOST POST: Concerns have arisen in the village over the removal of the Post Box located outside the former village store on Town Street. Enquiries by villagers via the Post Office have revealed that there are no plans to replace the much used facility as alternative options are available within villager’s reach.
The alternative boxes are situated in Portland Place and at the end of Sutton Lane, almost half a mile from the village, and in one instance the box is in another village! (Barnby Moor)
Neither Royal Mail / Post Office Services or the department responsible have yet to inform villagers of their decision to take this collection point out of circulation. District Councillor Tracey Taylor has taken the matter up on villager’s behalf and will report back when the position has been clarified.
DANESHILL LAKES: The Friends of Daneshill Lakes local Nature Reserve at Torworth have organised two special events for February at the Reserve.
- The first event on Friday 17th February, being in school half-term week and National Nest Box Week, the friends are inviting children to build their own bird nest box to take home. They can also learn how to identify all the ducks, geese and swans on the lake. Make bird feeders using cones to take home, take a look at the natural world through a microscope, and do much more family activities. There is a charge of £5.00 per nest box but otherwise this drop-in event is free! Hot drinks and home-made cakes will be on sale. The event takes place from 11:00am to 3:30pm and children must be accompanied by an adult.
- On Sunday 26th February our popular wild flower enthusiast Kevin Widdowson will be concentrating on trees and “how do you know which tree is which” when they have no leaves? All will be revealed at this free to join, community family event which runs from 10:30am to 12:30pm, meeting in the reserve car park at 10:15am. No booking require.
If you are interested in supporting the Friends of Daneshill lakes, their next meeting takes place on Monday 13th February at 7:00pm at the Idle Valley Rural Learning Centre. You will be made very welcome if you come along. Membership is £5.00per year.

UNIFORM PRESENCE: Two PCSO’s were seen in the village last week calling at properties on Station Road and other places in the village and talking to residents about local matters and any issues raised.
YE OLDE BELL: Staff at Ye Olde Bell Hotel and Restaurant toasted local owners Paul and Hilary Levack who are celebrating their 10 years ownership of the hotel. The dedicated team at the hotel in Barnby Moor, North Nottinghamshire presented the couple with a specially designed leather bound book that shared their thanks, memories and anecdotes from the last ten years.
Kate Firth, General Manager, said: “We all felt we could not let this very special anniversary go by without marking the occasion to show how much we all appreciate how fortunate we are that Hilary and Paul stepped in to save our wonderful hotel. Their vision, investment and support has been tremendous and we are all looking forward to the excitement of the next decade under their ownership, whatever it may bring.”
Longstanding local residents of Barnby Moor, Paul and Hilary had strong ties and affection for Ye Olde Bell and when the hotel came up for auction after years of ownership by various hotel groups, they decided to step in. They have spent the last 10 years overseeing a full-scale renovation and restoration that was sympathetic to the heritage yet firmly brought the 17th century hotel into the 21st century.
COUNTY COUNCILLOR: On a more sombre note our County Councillor and former District Councillor Liz Yates, who has been representing Sutton Ward for more years than she cares to remember, has announced that she will not be seeking re-election at the forthcoming elections in May. Liz has been a stalwart not only for the village but for the ward as a whole over the years and villagers are indebted to her for all her work and support over that period in office at both District and County level. Present District Councillor Tracey Taylor has been nominated as the candidate to stand for election when the vacant position arises.
If you have any issues or concerns your County Councillor Mrs Liz Yates can be contacted at any reasonable time on 01777 860 219.
GARDENING CLUB: At the Gardening Club meeting on 7th February we were informed and entertained by Graham Bodle of Walkers Nursery with his talk on Construction of a Chelsea Flower Show Garden’. We learned about his own garden, a Tatton Park flower show garden, a Sensory Garden for deaf people, with Chelsea 2015 the icing on the cake. With respect to the latter (exhibited in the Artisan Section) we learned about the Inspiration, Layout and Plants which resulted in a unique garden, and also that the great sculptural features which made an indispensable contribution to the originality of this garden (and others), comes from his aunt.
The next meeting is on Tuesday 7th March at 7:15pm in the Village Hall. Everyone is welcome to hear Don Witton talk about ‘Euphorbias and Spring Flower Perennials. Further details about the club and its activities are available from Elaine Hauser on 01777 705 274.
PARISH COUNCIL: The Council met on Wednesday 8th February as scheduled with chairperson Angela Close officiating, supported by six councillors and the clerk to the council Nigel Johnson noting the proceedings and advising where necessary.
District Councillor Tracey Taylor was also in attendance for support and advice if required. Apologies were received from absent councillors.
The chair opened the meeting and welcomed the members of the public present, and then went on to welcome new member local resident Mark Rankin, who has recently been co-opted to council.
Various topics came under discussion during the night, including the loss of the post box facility. Planning, Neighbourhood Plan, Tree Preservation Orders, Styles and Gates on footpaths / bridleways were also amongst many other items discussed.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday 8th March at the usual starting time of 7:00pm. Please come along and show your support.
MEET THE NEIGHBOURS: The group met as arranged on Wednesday 8th February at the Gate Inn and enjoyed a communal lunch of chicken, chips and salad, followed by apple pie and cream with tea and coffees to put the finishing touches to an excellent meal. All the latest notices were given out and the usual quiz and raffle took place.
Despite the change of days (Group normally met on Tuesdays) a group of about 45 people were in attendance and enjoyed a good meal, whilst socialising with their peers and catching up with all the news and views from in and around the village.
The next one is on Wednesday 8th March at 1:00pm in the Gate Inn when cottage pie and vegetables will be served. To book, if you have not already done so, phone Joan on 702137 or email mtn@suttoncumlound.net.
SUTTON ART GROUP WORKSHOP: On Friday 10th February, Sutton Art group held a workshop for acrylics in the style of Cezanne.
The workshop was led by artist Jackie Whall and some very colourful and effective pieces of work were produced. After a couple of practice pieces the group produced still life paintings which were very much in the style of Cezanne. There is now a new website where the pleasing results can be viewed.
The group continue to meet every Friday morning throughout the year in the Village Hall from 10:00am to 12:00nooon.
CAR BOOT/TABLE TOP SALE: The event went ahead as planned on Sunday 5th February at the Village Hall. The event started at 10:00am for buyers and a good number of buyers were through the door shortly after opening time, looking for a bargain, and with free entry and free parking for buyers and refreshments available at the event it turned out to be well worth a visit. Another sale is scheduled for Sunday 5th March.

QUIZ NIGHT: A very busy pub last Sunday were treated to an excellent quiz from Pat which was won by the 4 candles. It was nice to see the candles back in the pub again along with the Worksop crew. It’s a music quiz next week from Nigel, spanning the last seven decades of chart music. The £100 on play your cards right was not won even after a valiant attempt by Kieran, so it’s still up for grabs. Can you win it? It’s on again Sunday 8:00pm start.
