Management of Dogs in Sutton Meadow
A few years ago, Bassetlaw District Council embarked on a campaign against dog fouling in the areas used by the public for walking their pets. Dog mess is unsightly and unpleasant in several ways and, as vets will confirm, it is a health hazard to any dogs coming into close contact with it. Bassetlaw therefore laid down certain regulations for dog owners to follow, in that owners should clean up any dog mess deposited by their pets and placed used poo bags in the bins supplied specifically for this purpose in various areas throughout the village. A warning was given that irresponsible dog owners who failed to comply with the regulations would be at risk of a heavy on the spot fine.
These regulations have always been in force in Sutton Meadow from the day it was first opened because the meadow, though privately owned by the Nottinghamshire Community Foundation, is available to the general public for dog walking with the added stipulation that dogs be kept on leads at all times when being walked through the meadow and the NCF very much appreciate the willingness of the responsible dog owners to comply with the regulations.
It is regrettable however that dog fouling does still happen in the meadow and this, together with a recent second outbreak of a gastroenteritis-type of illness in local dogs, brought about an extension of the mid-winter closure period beyond the originally hoped for opening on January 17th 2022. It is hoped to re-open soon on a trial basis.
Meantime, a gentle reminder that owners who clear up after their pets protect everybody’s dogs, and their own.
