Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations 2 – 5 June

Most activities went ahead as planned and with a great deal of success. Thanks to all who helped in any way, and a special thanks to Sutton cum Lound Parish Council, acting on your behalf, for sponsoring and funding a community event that will be remembered hopefully for years to come. Congratulations!

Jubilee Beacon

The lighting of the Jubilee Beacon went ahead as planned at the village hall grounds on Thursday evening, 2nd June, as part of the Queen’s Jubilee Celebrations. This Beacon, along with many others lit around the UK, Overseas Territories and all the commonwealth Countries, was lit at 9:45pm as advertised. The village was fortunate to secure the services of County Councillor Tracey Taylor to perform the lighting ceremony, whose time and efforts are much appreciated as always. Thanks, Tracey, for your support now and in the future!

Church Matters (So do you)

The church has been heavily involved over the four days of the Jubilee Celebrations along with a great number of groups in the community in organising a Flower Festival over the period, with the church being open and manned by volunteers with refreshments available from 11:00am to 3:00pm each day and sometimes later. A vote of thanks must go to Shirley Stokes and helpers for all the hard work in organizing the flower festival, which finished on Sunday 12th (not an easy task!). Thank you also to all who helped in any way to make this event the success it turned out to be.

Proceeds from this will go to the fund to provide kitchen and toilet facilities which are urgently needed at this grade 1 listed building, especially for the older generation and any children attending. When completed, these facilities will lend the church more options to offer greater things to the village, which will be appreciated by most residents and help bring the building into the 21st Century.

Gardening Club

Some members of the committee assisted by family and friends have planted up the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Planter which is on the village green. It was quite a task with the planter stored on someone’s drive, 450 litres of compost on another drive, 2 bags of grit at another house, and plants at the nursery. It all came together and is now looking splendid. If there are any volunteers to help water or maintain the planter, please let the club know. Hopefully once settled in, it shouldn’t be a too arduous task as a lot of the plants are drought tolerant and or evergreen and the planter has capillary matting and a wick system so when the planter baskets are topped up the compost remains damp.

Thanks to all concerned.

A few vacancies still exist within the club, please contact: gardeningclub@suttoncumlound.net for further information.

Gardening Club Away Day

The organisers and committee of the club have organised an away day for the group with a visit to RHS Bridgewater, taking place on Wednesday 17th August 2022. The cost for the whole trip (return coach and admission to RHS Bridgewater) will be £15.00 per person. There will be a £10.00 per person non-refundable deposit taken in May please, and the balance of £5.00 per person payable in June. Or, if you wish, you can pay the entire £15.00 per person in May! Details of coach times and final arrangements will be circulated nearer the time.

Sutton and Barnby Moor W.I.

Members of the local W.I have been busy in the village over the holiday period, helping and assisting with various activities during the celebration period. Despite many of the members approaching their twilight years, they were amongst the first to offer their services to help support others in the community to enjoy the Jubilee celebrations and other events, which they have done over many years. As some members of the local group approach Seventy Years (70) in existence, it is only right and fitting they should be recognized for their efforts over that period. It’s not all Jam and Jerusalem as many younger people think, the association have brought many and various topics to the table over the years, nationally the WI are involved in various resolutions placed before parliament and in the past have made a Prime minister re-think national policy. This action was for the benefit of all, not just W.I. members.

One of the best-known members of the Institute is the lady who most of us admire dearly, non-other than H.M. the Queen. Are you a proud and respected members of a local branch of the Women’s Institute? You can be, by just attending a meeting of a group near you, where you will receive a very warm welcome! Many long-lasting friendships have been formed through branch meetings in local villages, and many crafts and skills have also been taught at local meetings. Younger members are being sought by most branches, as in today’s ever-changing world the changes are happening somewhat quicker than the older members can absorb them. Can you bring the current membership up to date with any of your specialities? If you can, then please contact any local branch and make the effort to attend! Will you support them, just as they have supported others locally over the last 70 years, and even longer in some cases. It’s part of our local and national heritage – everybody has heard of the W.I.

Sutton and Barnby Moor WI meet at Sutton Village Hall on the 3rd Wednesday of each Month at 7:15pm (summer) and 2:15pm (winter). All new members and visitors are welcome.
