Harvest Supper
A harvest supper has been arranged to take place in the Village Hall on Saturday 8th October at 7:00pm. Tickets available for the event cost £12.00 to include a Pie and Pea supper, plus dessert and coffees and teas. There is an opportunity to win a festive hamper on the night.
Gate Inn Update
The landlord of the Gate Inn, Sutton, has had his plan to convert the Inn into housing rejected by Bassetlaw Council when the planning committee met on Wednesday evening, 31st August at Worksop Town Hall. Previously, his plan to build shops on the site was also rejected. 80 objections were submitted to the change, with the council subsequently backing their objections. A group of residents and a representative from the Parish Council were present on the night.
T’ai Chi Classes
Will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays for Lee Style T’ai Chi Classes in the Village Hall (details below):
- Tuesday 6:30pm to 7:30pm
- Thursday 10:00am to 11:00am

Post Office
The Post Office will operate in the Village Hall on Wednesdays from 10:00am to 12:30pm.
Gardening Club
August was the club’s “Away Day” trip to RHS Bridgewater; an early start, boarding Kettlewell’s coach at 8:00 am and arriving at 10: 15 am. The group had a good journey and good weather, managing to dodge both heavy showers or extreme heat, which we’d had the previous and following days. Bridgewater staff met the coach and were very efficient in directing us through their admission centre and providing some vouchers toward spends. Steeped in history, the site of this new RHS Garden contains fascinating remnants from previous uses. Worsley New Hall (now demolished) and the lost historic grounds have been redesigned into a new RHS Garden. The gardens were splendid and built to enrich the lives of surrounding communities (locals of Worsley and Salford have free entry until 2023!). Everyone enjoyed the gardens, lakes, cafés, and shop, and before we knew it, it was time to come home, arriving back in Retford at 6:00pm.
At the club’s last meeting on September 6th September, Annette McKenzie gave a talk on “insight and behaviour of owls”.

Sutton and Barnby Moor W.I.
The group held their away day dinner as arranged in August when 15 members made the effort and enjoyed a communal meal with their peers. Things return to normal this month when the group will meet as usual, (Wednesday 21st September) same time, same venue. You are invited to join them
This is a talk and demonstration night when the group will be looking forward to welcoming Mr. Neil Curtis, who will talk and demonstrate the making of Pork Pies! Members are invited to bring along guests in the evening (a small cover charge will apply).
New members and visitors are always welcome every 3rd Wednesday of the month at Sutton Village Hall, 7:15pm (summer), or 2:15pm (winter).
Mobile Library
The Mobile Library van visited the village as scheduled on Monday 5th September, stopping at all the designated points.
St Bartholomew’s Church
Church Service
There was no service at St Bartholomew’s on Sunday, September 4th. Worshippers were invited to join people from all over the parish at Scofton Church at 9:00am, when the Bishop of Southwell was officiating at a Holy Communion service.
We remember the Reverend Bob Smith, at one time vicar of St Bartholomew’s, who sadly died on Monday. We pray for his soul, and we pray that his wife Val and family will feel God’s presence in their sadness.
Toilet and Kitchen Update
The church is moving ever closer to raising the money needed for the installation of a toilet and kitchen to make the building more useful and inclusive for community events. So far, because of people’s generosity, £45,000 has been raised towards the target. Further fundraising activities are being planned as well as the church seeking funding from grants.
A special Just Giving site has been set up for anyone wishing to make a personal donation towards the project. Every penny counts and the church appreciates all donations large or small. If you would like to donate you can either click on the link below, or make a donation by cheque posting it to us, or handing it to one of the Churchwardens.
Meet the Neighbours
This informal lunch club has been operating for over 15 years, providing a monthly event for everyone where, for a very reasonable price, you can enjoy a fresh home-cooked two-course meal followed by tea or coffee. There is usually a fun quiz, a raffle with exciting prizes and there is a licensed bar. Why not come along and meet friends old and new in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere?
For anyone new to the village, this is a great way to “Meet the Neighbours” and find out all that goes on in and around the village.
