North Notts Lions

The North Notts Lions team will be visiting the village on Wednesday night, 14th December to accompany Father Christmas. The sleigh will be doing the rounds in the neighbouring village of Lound from 5:00pm onwards and will make its way to Sutton as soon as possible.

Children, please keep a lookout for a rather stout gentleman in a red coat, sporting a large white beard and whiskers, you will recognise him as Santa Claus, don’t miss him!

During the visit, the Lions team will be making a door-to-door collection, as they do each year. All donation received will go to the Lions charity, which helps people all around the area.

Please show your support for the Lions and all the hard work they do throughout the year and especially during the festive season when they turn out each night, until Christmas Eve.

North Notts Lions – please support them!

Sutton and Barnby Moor Gardening Club

On Sunday 4th December, the gardening club held their annual Christmas Dinner event at the Styrrup Golf and Country Club, somewhat earlier than usual but deemed necessary due to member’s many commitments over the festive season and beyond. A group of forty plus made the effort and arrived at 1:00pm at the venue full of good spirit (mostly bottled) ready to join their peers and looking forward to the first Christmas dinner of the festive season for many.

Gardening Club chairperson, Jenny Bailey, and members of the committee were on hand to welcome visitors as they arrived and helped them settle in and mingle with friends old and new before the start of the big event. Members were then invited, a table at a time, to take advantage of the excellent cuisine placed before them, with no restrictions on portion size (diets ignored on this occasion), with staff in attendance to assist if needed or required. Main course over, time for the sweet on offer, a choice of Xmas Pudding or cheesecake and cream. This was followed by teas / coffees and the traditional mince pies, which were much appreciated by those present.

A small raffle then took place, with the first prize being an excellent Christmas hamper kindly donated by Morrisons of Retford. Other prizes were won during the afternoon session. The gathering then socialized for the remainder of the afternoon, during which a vote of thanks was given to the Chairperson and committee from member Peter Masters for organizing such an event and dealing with obstacles encountered along the way. Well done all concerned.!

Christmas Tree Lighting

Villagers and friends came together as the festive season began in earnest on Friday night, 2nd December, when the village returned to their traditional Christmas tree lighting ceremony. Residents and visitors gathered on the small green at the junction of Town Street/Sutton Lane and Station Road for this popular event. They were joined by the handbell ringers from Ordsall Church, playing festive carols and songs, which the crowd joined in with. Members of the community came together to help put the event together. Mulled wine and mince pies were offered on the night, which were enjoyed by those present.

Thanks must go to the organisers, and all connected with the event! A good start to the festive season!

St Bartholomew’s Church

Church Service

Sunday 27th November 2022 was Advent Sunday at the local church.

The service began at the usual time of 9:30am, when “Holy Communion was held. The celebrant on this occasion was our Bishop Paul of Southwell and Nottingham, who preached about “being ready!” The service was made extra special when he presented Joan Herrington, our Lay Reader and Geoff Webb, our organist, with letters of gratitude for their service. Joan has completed just over 31 years as Lay Reader and Geoff over 40 years as the resident organist at St Bartholomew’s church. We are very blessed to have them both as members of our church.

It was great to welcome Bishop Paul this morning to lead our benefice Advent Sunday communion, where a lovely service was had by all. The service at the local church on Sunday 11th December is a “Family Service” which will take place at the usual time of 9:30am.   Please come along and bring the family!   Everybody welcome!

Christmas Tree Festival
