River Swimming Warning
Police are urging the public to avoid swimming in the River Idle and surrounding bodies of water due to significant safety risks.
While the river may appear calm and inviting, it is deceptively dangerous. The River Idle has a fast‑flowing current that can quickly overpower even strong swimmers. Despite often looking shallow, the water depth and flow can change suddenly, creating hazardous conditions that may not be immediately visible.
Parents and guardians are strongly advised to speak with their children about the dangers of entering the river. What may seem like a safe place to paddle or cool off can quickly become life-threatening.
Please take this warning seriously:
- Do not enter the water
- Stay well clear of the riverbanks, especially in unsupervised areas
- In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the appropriate service
