IDLE VALLEY SOCIETY: The society met on Tuesday 1st March in Barnby Moor Village Hall at 7:30pm. The speaker was local man Mike Vickers who told the gathering of the “Birds and Natural History of Sutton and Lound Site of Special Scientific Interest.” The talk covered the areas behind the villages of Sutton and Lound and accompanied by an excellent power point presentation showed how the areas had changed and developed over the years. Various owners during the period and the latter day involvement of The Idle Valley Rural Learning Centre in conjunction with Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust. A great variety and species of bird were shown and discussed. Many well-known, some not so well-known and one or two species facing extinction due to every day changes in countryside life and the loss of rural habitats. New or different types seen are encouraged by local enthusiasts to remain in the area, with some degree of success.

Members were told of the sighting of migratory birds stopping off in the area for a rest and to feed before heading off to warmer climes. Rarer species creating a lot of interest with “twitchers” arriving from destinations various, e.g. Cornwall and Scotland.

Whilst keeping an eye out for birds of distinction, during last December’s heavy snow falls, the speaker was entertained by rabbits and hares and a lonely weasel scavenging for food amongst the snow.

A very informative and entertaining evening, with the main characters living nearby, almost on the doorstep.
