VILLAGE HALL COMMITTEE: The Village Hall Committee met on Monday evening

11thApril at 7:30pm.when various items came under discussion. These included:

Finances, Private Hire, Business Planning, Fundraising, Maintenance and forthcoming AGM.

The Hall Committee applied for a grant on behalf of the Meet the Neighbours set up, a regular user group at the hall to assist towards hiring charges, which in line with most other overheads are increasing on a regular basis. The application to the Sir Stuart and Lady Florence Goodwin Charitable Trust was successful and a sum of one hundred pounds (£100.00) has been granted for the purpose stated.

This has ensured that the group, can continue to operate, on a voluntary basis for the foreseeable future, providing a much-needed function in the community, with thanks to the Goodwin Charitable Trust.

The date for the AGM has been decided as Monday 9th May at 7:30pm in the Village Hall. On this occasion the whole committee will stand down and a new committee will be formed. Anyone who wishes to be considered for a position should contact the secretary as soon as possible or any committee member.

IDLE VALLEY SOCIETY: Sub-postmaster Michael Carnall was the guest speaker when the group met on Tuesday 5th April at Barnby Moor Village Hall at 7:30pm.

“I Wanna tell you a story” no not the Max Bygraves catch-phrase, this is Michael Carnall addressing the Idle Valley Natural History Society when he informed them of his memorable visit to “Highgrove” the residence of HRH Prince Charles. A keen amateur gardener, the speaker told of his part in helping form a gardening club in his local village. During the closed season (If there is one for gardeners) various suggestions were put forward by members to keep the club proactive.

One was a visit to Highgrove, organic farming being the in thing, so no problem there then? The Secretary duly instructed to make the necessary arrangements for the group. Nothing heard!! Approximately three years later a letter bearing the royal seal was received by the group. They had been invited to attend as a group to see how it should be done. First the paper work to complete, names of those attending.

More details required, can we all make the given date or shall we change it?

No option – this is the date!! Everybody was keen and made the date a priority on their calendars.   Transport arranged with local tour operator in Retford, and at approximately 5am a motley crew set out for the destination.

On arrival at the venue, having made good time, traffic conditions being favourable, the group were almost an hour early, officials who met them advised them of the time scheduled and they were dispatched from the site for security reasons.

Driving round the lanes of Gloucestershire for forty-five minutes admiring the scenery another attempt was made, this time with some success, but only after more security checks.

Eventually the group had their wish as they made their way around the beautiful site, which was apparently started from scratch and planned in detail by HRH and trusted advisers. Although not in residence during these visits, information gleaned from persons various denote that the Prince is a hands-on type and not just a gentleman farmer, looking after what may be called a kitchen garden, if on a somewhat larger scale surrounded by some of the best countryside in rural England. Well worth the visit.

The speaker and his club were overwhelmed by their visit and would hope to go again should the occasion present itself. An avid question and answer session ensued which lasted almost half an hour and on completion of the nights talk, chairman Adrian Blackburn gave the customary vote of thanks.
