ST.BARTHOLOMEW’S CHURCH: The service at the local church this Sunday 22nd May is “Songs of Praise”. The service commences as usual at 9:30am and everybody is welcome.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH: Monday 16th May was the 12th AGM of the local association held in Sutton Village Hall at 7:30pm with 28 people in attendance.

After apologies were given the chairman proceeded to give his report in which he outlined the progress of the local scheme over the last twelve months.

He announced the total number of properties in the scheme and the number of co-ordinators overseeing them. The crime figures for the year were given and a substantial drop was noted in the immediate area thanks to the ongoing Police support from Beat Manager PC Chris Glover assisted by PCSO Catherine Phillips.

Thanks went to Sutton Parish Council for their support and for their generous grant of £140 in full payment of the charges levied for the use of the ringmaster system.

The chairman’s address ended with a general thank you to all who assisted the scheme in any way over the last twelve months.

Apologies were received on behalf of two of the main speakers for the evening who were unable to attend due to illness; Terry Reynolds, Chairman of Bassetlaw Neighbourhood Watch Association and Geraldine Pearce, BCVS (Bassetlaw Council for Voluntary Services)

After a short break for refreshments Sally Potter from the Victim Support Unit based at Worksop Police Station addressed the gathering and outlined her role as head of department. She explained how her team of volunteers in partnership with other agencies, including Police, A1 Housing, Anti-social Behaviour Team, Women’s Aid Schools, and Fire Service can assist the victims of crime.

Press releases from various cases in the area over past years were shown, giving those in attendance further insight and a general idea of the volume and variety of cases the unit deals with.

On behalf of the Police, PCSO Catherine Phillips introduced herself to the meeting, although already well known to most residents, many who were present on the night.

The Officer told of her welcome to the village and her pleasure in serving the residents.

Talking briefly about her monthly surgeries in the village hall which coincides with Post Office sessions held there, and the “Patchwalk” sessions with colleague PC Chris Glover. Visits to the local school and youth groups are also featured in her patrols in and around the village. She thanked people in general for being the “Eyes and Ears” of the village and for being observant and vigilant and passing on any information gleaned, which can be followed up or dismissed accordingly.

All information gathered can assist in making her job easier and allow more time to be allocated to other village matters.

APRIL CLUB: The Sutton club will meet on Friday 20th in the Village Hall at the usual time of 2:00pm.   Members old and new always welcome.

POSTAL SERVICES: The Post Office in the Village Hall will be available as usual on two occasions each week. On Mondays: 9:30am – 1:30pm and on Thursdays 9:00am – 1:00pm. The local office can supply residents with: Pensions, Foreign Currency, Travel Insurance, Car Insurance, Investments and Savings.

VILLAGE PLANTERS: Work has already begun in re-setting the village planters in readiness for the sunny months ahead. Anyone interested in helping should contact the Parish Clerk directly via e-mail; john-nigel@hotmail.com or phone 07955 585 798.

COFFEE MORNING: The coffee morning held in the Village Hall on Saturday 14th May from 10:30am – 12 :0pm was another success, raising much needed funds for the Village Hall. Thanks to regular hosts Brian and Kathryn Seddons for organising the event.

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK: Sutton school are doing their bit for Christian Aid Week by holding a fundraising event on Thursday 19th May. Pupils will be baking cakes and biscuits and invite everyone to join them for tea, coffee and biscuits at the school from 2:30 – 4:00pm. You are invited to join them.

COMMUNITY LITTER PICK: Last Saturdays’ (14th May) litter pick was very successful with many members of the parish turning out to support the event. They were rewarded as promised by tea and cakes at the village’s coffee morning, courtesy of Kathryn and Brian Seddons. A huge thank you to all Parishioners who gave up a little of their time, to help keep our parish tidy.

Sutton Lane yielded the greatest amount of litter, and as expected motorist still ranked highest as the worst offenders in littering the parish, with empty cigarette boxes, drinks bottles and fast food packaging, topping the list of offending items. Motorists – Please take your litter home with you!

ANNUAL PARISH MEETING: Wednesday May 11th saw a newly formatted annual parish meeting in Sutton cum Lound. The meeting heard annual reports from around the parish including, St Bartholomew’s Church, The villages C of E School, The Village Hall Charity committee, The Parish Plan Steering Group, Nottinghamshire Wildlife trust (Bellmoor), and the Parish Council Chairman’s report. The inclusion of all these aspects gave a great opportunity for members of the public to learn about what has been happening in the parish and what to expect in the year ahead. Thank you to all involved in delivering these reports and we look forward to your continued involvement and support at next years annual meeting.
