Despite increased efforts of the local Police and the success of “Operation Metallica” metal theft has been on the increase over the past few years, and is reaching epidemic proportions. Incidents reported from a hospital tell of operations being cancelled because thieves had stolen cables from back-up generators.
Papers and television are full of stories where the lives of ordinary people have been disrupted because of metal thefts. Businesses have been forced to close; holiday makers and business travellers have missed flights and emergency services and care homes isolated because phone lines have been cut.
Sutton was a victim of the cable theft when phone line communications were out of commission for almost a week.
War memorials have been vandalised, graves have been desecrated, manhole covers stolen, thieves have taken ambulance trolleys, safety railings have been removed and metal statues have been taken from public parks.
