PARISH COUNCIL:  Usually meet on the 2nd Wednesday of each month and discuss issues regarding the village, but due to the hall closure last week the meeting has now been re-scheduled to take place on Thursday 16th February at the usual time of 7:00pm.

Residents are not only welcome but also actively encouraged to participate. Further details from the Clerk.

PLAY FACILITIES: Work is scheduled to start on the new play facilities in the village hall grounds on Wednesday 15th February 2012.

It has been a long wait since the Parish Plan Steering Group (PPSG) held its Play Facility open evening at the Village Hall in May 2011. Apart from a small piece in the Sutton Spotlight last year, it may seem as though nothing has been happening on this front since then. That is not the case.

The PPSG has been working closely with the Village Hall Charity for the land, and Notts County Council (NCC) who awarded a Local Improvement Scheme (LIS) grant for the equipment. Local Improvement Schemes are helping to regenerate and transform the county’s village and town centres, countryside, businesses, leisure and tourism spots. The PPSG is very pleased to announce that work on the new village play facilities will start in the Village Hall grounds on Wednesday 15th February 2012.

The project is due to be completed around the first week of March 2012, weather and unexpected set-backs permitting. During this time the NCC Contractors, Crestra, will be on site to install the equipment. There should be very little disturbance to local residents, or Village Hall users while this is going on.

As each piece of equipment is installed, it will be fenced off from the general public. We appreciate that this has been a long time coming and that many people will be eager to try it out. However, until the entire area has been completed, we do not own it. So, please be patient and let Crestra get on with their job as quickly as possible.

The open evening last year produced a long list of things that people wanted to have in a play facility. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to provide all of it. We’ve tried to provide a balance of activities across all age groups, working within the available funds. We’ve done the best we can.

Finally, when the play area does open, do enjoy it, but please treat it with respect – it’s your facility.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE:  When the group met on Wednesday 15th February, in Sutton Village Hall, speaker  Chris du Feu addressed the members on the subject of Garden snails. The competition on the night was the making of a hand-made brooch using snail shell enamel. A full report will follow.

VILLAGE HALL BOOKINGS: Enquiries with regard to the booking of the Village Hall should be made by contacting 07092 985 831, by visiting www.suttonvillagehall.net or email bookings@suttonvillagehall.net.

IDLE VALLEY SOCIETY: The group met as arranged on Tuesday evening 7th February in Barnby Moor Village Hall at 7:30pm.

The speaker on this occasion should have been Tom Champion who was due to give a talk on Commonwealth War Graves in France and Belgium, but due to family illness regrettably had to cancel. The group were very fortunate to acquire at short notice the services of former society member Phillip Palmer, local ornithologist and seasoned traveller who just happened to be in the country before setting off on his next adventure. Phil intended to address the meeting on the subject of Polar Bears and his trips to the Arctic Circle but included a slight detour as he took the group on a bird watching trip via Spitzbergen, before showing the Polar Bears at their finest on their home ground. Spectacular views, spectacular pictures and a spectacular evening. Much appreciated by those present.

SUTTON ART GROUP: The group will meet as usual on Friday mornings and will continue throughout the season. Further details available from Joan Reiter on 01777 702 137 or Margaret Beare on 01777 704 836.

If you can help please feel free to contact us on: 07092 985 871 or email parishplansecretary@suttoncumlound.net.

CO-ORDINATOR FOUND: Attempts to find a co-ordinator for the local Neighbourhood Watch Committee have at last proved successful.

A local resident has been approached and agreed to serve. This fills the vacancy left by the sad passing of June Barlow last year and brings the committee up to full strength. Further details will follow when the paper work is completed.
