Too many Notts villages still have a really slow broadband service

Are you frustrated by slow internet speeds at home or at work? If so, you’re not alone, thousands of people and businesses in the more rural parts of Nottinghamshire are still getting very slow broadband, or worse still – none at all!

See the map of who has, and who hasn’t

This is annoying for home users but potentially disastrous for rural businesses as it makes their websites and payment systems very slow and causes a whole host of other factors that make them less competitive.

The reason why we’re in this situation is that telecoms companies have been prioritising urban areas where they know there will lots of demand. They think it’s not worth their while coming out to rural villages to replace cables and update equipment.

“Things might stay this way for many years unless we all get together and persuade the telecoms companies to take action,” says Councillor Keith Girling, Chairman of Nottinghamshire County Council’s Economic Development Committee.

“That’s why the County Council is seeking at least 5,000 people to sign an online pledge saying we desperately need faster broadband here in rural Notts.

“We’ll present this to the telecoms companies later this year to prove that the demand is high here in Notts and to urge them to prioritise our county.”
