Motorists: take care as snow continues

Motorists are being warned to travel only if necessary as snow continues to fall across the county.

If you have to drive, plan ahead, leave plenty of time and exercise caution. Take care on the roads by being prepared and aware of changing weather conditions.

Motorists should make sure vehicles are stocked with de-icer, scrapers, blankets and food. Ensure your vehicle has enough water, oil and fuel before setting out.

Even if you are driving on a familiar route and the snow has cleared, remember that black ice can form as temperatures plummet overnight.

Check weather forecasts the night before you are due to travel so you can make an informed decision on whether it is safe to drive and factor in extra travel time you may need.

Drive slowly, avoid sharp braking and acceleration, use the highest gear possible to avoid wheel spin while maintaining a steady speed and allow extra space to stop. It can take 10 times longer to stop in icy conditions than on a dry road.

If your vehicle suddenly skids, ease off the accelerator, but do not brake suddenly.
