Man jailed for offence under 1824 Vagrancy Act

A man who was arrested after being found inside a waste bin has been jailed for four weeks for an offence under the Vagrancy Act.
James Lee, 23, of Potter Street, Worksop appeared at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court last Friday (5 April 2013), where he pleaded guilty to being found in an enclosed premise.
Using legislation first introduced in 1824, Lee was charged after he was discovered inside the bin at the Priory Centre, Bridge Place, Worksop, around 11.10pm on 1 April.
Sgt Simon Spooner said: “This shows that officers will use both modern techniques and old laws to deal with offenders.
“Lee claimed to be looking for food in the bins, and this may have been the case. However it was likely that his intention was to steal whatever he could find at the time.”
