SUTTON LEVEL CROSSING: Rail-track have indicated that the crossing on Station Road in the village will again be closed from 11:45pm on Saturday 3rd May until 8:25am on Sunday 4th May to allow essential maintenance work to take place.

Cameras have once again been installed on Station Road in the village as part of the combined efforts between government and Rail Track to monitor traffic responses and help improve safety in using crossings in general. This issue has recently caused concern and has been raised by local MP John Mann as recently reported.

ST.BARTHOLOMEW’S CHURCH: On Sunday 4th May, “Morning Prayer “will take place at the local Church. The service starts at 9:30am and everyone is welcome.

SUTTON GARDENING CLUB: Members are reminded that the club’s AGM will take place in the Village Hall on Monday 5th May at 7:15pm.

OPEN STUDIOS: Local man Richard Rogers is opening his studio on Sutton Lane in the village to the public as part of the 2014 Notts Open Studios Event. The dates for the above are as follows and include the weekends of  May 31st to June 1st and June 14th to June 15.

Over 150 artists and craft makers invite you to visit their studios and events in Nottinghamshire from the 3rd May until the 15th June. In the immediate area studios are situated at Mattersey, Sutton cum Lound, Retford, Askham, Laneham and Tuxford, with others spread throughout the county. This gives interested parties the opportunity to see and buy contemporary art and craft works at source produced in their own area.

The event is promoted by Open Studios Notts, supported by Nottinghamshire County Council. Free entry to studios and events unless otherwise stated.

DANESHILL UPDATE: The drilling exploration at Daneshill has ended and decommissioning of the site will start imminently.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH: The local committee met on Wednesday 30th April at the usual time of 2:30pm and a full report will follow.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE: When the members met in the Village Hall on Wednesday 16th April President Jackie Payne chaired the event.   Two visitors were present on the night. The official notices were given out, Branch delegate Fiona Pagdin gave a report from the annual meeting held at the Royal Centre Nottingham on Thursday 20th March.

Details of the River Idle Group of WI’s group meeting were announced and this will be held in Ranskill church on Wednesday 7th May at 7:30pm. The speaker(s) on this occasion will be Shaun Clark and Frances Evans who will talk about Gainsborough Old Hall, Medieval and Tudor Etiquette.

Steve Shelley from Deli and Dine was introduced as this month’s speaker and spoke about cheese and the varieties available and the production of the same, with samples available for members to tempt their delicate palates. Advice was given as to the use and storage of cheeses in general.

During the evenings session a draw took place for the Federation Bursary valued at £200 pounds this was won by Mavis Bradley. Sutton and Barnby Moor bursary valued at £150.00 pounds was won by Chris Abbott. These awards are redeemed against a course run at Denman College in Oxford.

At the end of the evening Pauline Marsh gave the vote of thanks and refreshments were in the capable hands of Mesdames Val Moore and Fiona Pagdin. Further details of the group and its activities are available from Secretary Michelle Jaafar on Retford 818 092. Members old and new always welcome.

VILLAGE QUIZ NIGHT: A total of 56 people were in attendance at the Quiz night held in the Village Hall on the evening of Friday 25th April. Unforeseen circumstances prevented the other team of four from attending on the night with all 60 places previously sold.

Quizmaster Nigel Johnson was in the chair assisted by his wife Haley who operated the computer side of the event. The event itself covered many categories and topics including: Films, TV, Music, Drama and Geography spanning many years.

During the interval patrons were invited to take part in a Musical Bingo session which caused a bit of consternation on the night. The winner in this section was local resident Tim Cook.

After more refreshments and an excellent Pie and Pea supper organised on the night by Diane Hall, the gathering were ready to tackle the second part of the quiz which followed a similar format to part one of the evening. A lot of thought and deliberation went into the answers during this section and after a lot of banter and good humour from the floor the eventual winners were declared as Jane Sulley’s Crew from the village. Worthy winners on the night and pleased to accept the £40 prize money on offer. Committee Member Fred Payne gave the customary vote of thanks at the end of the proceedings with a special word of thanks to Nigel Johnson who compiled and compered the event.

Many visitors stayed behind and socialised for a an hour after the quiz finished, with several enquiries about the possibility of another event of a similar nature taking place in the future.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE: The WI ladies met as planned on Wednesday 16th April in the Village Hall. On this occasion Steve Shelley from the Deli and Dine was due to address the membership .and a full report will follow.   Members old and new always welcome
