SUTTON LEVEL CROSSING: Ardent management company representatives were calling at properties on Station Road in the village on Monday afternoon with reference to the feasibility study being carried out in connection with the East Coast Main Line Level Crossing Closure programme. Government proposal are putting 500 crossings throughout the country at risk of closure. Working on behalf of Network Rail, the callers were collecting views and comments from residents living near the crossing with regards to the study, who may be affected by one of the proposals for Barnby Moor and Sutton level crossing should the closure go ahead.
The company agents are requesting Sutton residents attend public exhibition events taking place at Scrooby village hall on Friday 4th July between 1:00pm and 7:00pm and also on Saturday 5th July between 10:00am and 4:00pm where there will be representatives available to answer any questions you may have on the proposals.
CAN YOU HELP? My name is Cyril Hunsley and I am seeking to find my cousin who lived in Lound in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Unfortunately I do not know her married name.
Her maiden name was Maureen West and she previously lived in Todwick, near Sheffield. At the present time she would be approx 70 yrs of age. Is it possible to publicise this within the village and if anyone knows her whereabouts, I would be pleased to receive contact details via your village correspondent. Thank you.
ST BARTHOLOMEW’S CHURCH: At the local church this Sunday 6th July “Morning Prayer” will take place. The service starts at 9:30am and everyone is welcome.
PARISH COUNCIL MEETING: The Parish Council will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday 9th July at the usual time of 7:00pm in the Village Hall. Chairman Ron Beare and his fellow councillors invite residents to join them as they work on behalf of the village.
NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH: The committee met as scheduled on Wednesday 25th June and various topics came under discussion, including the following:
Crime information – In the month of April there were 14 crimes in the whole of the beat area. In Sutton cum Lound there was 1 crime – ‘theft other’ – no more details are available at the moment.
Incidents in Station Road – in the past two weeks there have been two occasions when the owners of horses in the paddock to the rear of station road properties have witnessed suspicious behaviour – the last being a transit van with an Irish number plate which backed down a private track to the paddock.
The vehicle made off when the driver was challenged by a nearby resident.
Membership Update: It was reported that the initiative to secure members email addresses was proceeding very well. From a membership of 200 we have 115 email addresses, 42 members without email and 44 members requiring a follow-up visit from a coordinator. Securing emails was making the communication to members extremely efficient, at the same time hugely reducing the work load of coordinators.
Coordinators are thanked for their work so far and are asked to make one final push to complete this initiative prior to the next meeting of the Committee at the end of July.
Closure of Retford Police Station – The group were dismayed to hear of the proposed closure of Retford Police station although plans have yet to be finalised, and concern was expressed that there is also likely to be other closures in the region, with unknown consequences for the effective containment of crime and those exhibiting criminal behaviour in evenings and early mornings. It is said, however, that should Harworth Police Station closure go ahead, another venue has been identified.
MEET THE NEIGHBOURS: The Meet the Neighbours group held their meeting in the Village Hall on Wednesday 10th June as arranged from 2pm – 4pm and a report will follow next week.
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE: Wednesday 18th June was an eventful day for Sutton and Barnby Moor WI. After attending the Baton Ceremony in the morning members then turned out again in the evening for the usual monthly meeting. President Jackie Payne opened the meeting and carried out the official business. The guest speaker for the evening was Annette McKenzie who spoke about owls. In fact the speaker had brought along a small owl called “Boogie” for members to see.
An interesting talk about owls and their habitats, feeding habits etc. Members were invited to hold the owl and were surprised at how little it weighed. A few new members and guests were present on the night and enjoyed this very informative talk. On completion of the talk Jackie Payne gave the customary vote of thanks.
