ST.BARTHOLOMEW’S CHURCH: On Sunday, November 9th, a “Remembrance Service” will take place at the local church. The service starts at the later time of 10:15 am and everyone is welcome. Please remember to join your fellow worshippers.
VILLAGE HALL: If you are a local tradesman or handy person or even a competent D.I.Y person the Village Hall could do with your assistance on a voluntary basis. If you can spare an hour or two per month to help keep the Village Hall in shape and maintained in a reasonable order then the Village Hall Committee would like to hear from you.
The objective is to build a volunteer force for the odd jobs and snagging that crop up from time to time at the hall and become a drain on the finances raised for major hall improvements. Any offers of help would be appreciated by the hall Trustees and certainly by the community at large.
Interested parties are asked to contact any member of the Village Hall committee or telephone 07092 985 831 for further details.
YOUTH BUS: Last week’s report stated that after a lot of hard work and effort by our County Councillor Mrs Liz Yates it may be a possibility that the Youth Bus will be returning to the village. News just in confirms that the present service will now continue to run until the end of February, when the current situation will be re-evaluated.
Good use of the bus by village teenagers is important if the services are to be retained for future use. Parents please take note and tell the kids.
BOGUS CALLERS: Trading Standards Officers, (Nottinghamshire) in conjunction with Neighbourhood Alert System report the following:
A report has been made by a Nottinghamshire resident stating that he was cold-called by someone claiming to be from Trading Standards. The telephone caller asked to speak about a claim on behalf of another person. The resident didn’t think it was a genuine call, and so has reported the incident.
Nottinghamshire County Council Trading Standards does not cold-call anyone to discuss car accidents or any other claims management scenario. If you do receive a call from someone claiming to be from Trading Standards or Nottinghamshire County Council and you are at all unsure about it, ask for their full name and say you’ll contact them back. You can then ring the County Council on 0300 500 80 80 to verify the identity of the caller. If the caller is bogus they will probably hang up without giving you any details.
Trading Standards recommend you ignore cold-callers. To report suspicious traders in your area, or to receive further advice, please phone Citizens Advice Consumer Service on: 03454 04 05 06.
MEET THE NEIGHBOURS: The next meeting of the Neighbours group will take place on Tuesday 11th November at the usual starting time of 2:00pm. As this is “Remembrance Day” patrons are requested to join their peers on the occasion as they meet for a remembrance tea with entertainment provided.
Anyone with any memorabilia is invited to bring it along and share it on the day.
Come along and join your neighbours,” wear your poppy with pride”, as we remember, as part of the Meet the Neighbours session this month.
GATE INN: After many hours of hard graft and various disappointments by all those involved, the local hostelry, The Gate Inn, opened its doors to customers old and new on Saturday evening 1st November after being closed for approximately eight weeks for refurbishment. Shortly after opening the venue was packed to overflowing as visitors called in to see and discuss the changes made to the venue.
Thanks to all concerned for the efforts in retaining and making the pub a place for villager’s and friends to meet, hopefully, for many years to come.
QUIZ NIGHT: Regular quiz nights have started at the recently refurbished Gate Inn Public House in the village. Sundays quiz was a closely contested event with only one point separating the winning team from those in second place.
Pablo and the halfpenny club were declared winners on the night as the session came to an end. The worthy winners receiving a gallon of ale for their efforts.
The quiz was a strictly run event with quiz-master John Jones pontificating on the night, but not without a bit of light banter and good humour thrown in.
Another quiz next Sunday at the regular starting time of 8:00pm.
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE: When the ladies of the local W.I. met on Wednesday the 15th October in the Village Hall the speaker for the evening was Joy Parsons who was more a demonstrator or instructor than a speaker. Joy was there to teach and show the ladies the rudiments of Tai Chi, the Chinese system of exercise and defence which makes good use of balance and co-ordination.
A very enjoyable evening which left many of those attending leaving fitter than when they first arrived. A produce stall was in operation during the evening.
The next meeting of the group scheduled for Wednesday 19th November will see Maggie Beare and Gail demonstrating and explaining the finer points of Pixel Painting. One not to be missed.
