ST.BARTHOLOMEW’S CHURCH: On Sunday 31st January, a “Candlemass Service” will take place at the local church. The English name, ‘Candlemas, refers to the custom of blessing and distributing candles and carrying them in procession before the mass. The light of the candles is symbolic of Christ as the light of the world, to stick to tradition all the candles should be made of beeswax.

An ancient Scottish rhyme tells us:-

If Candlemas day be dry and fair, The half o’ winter to come and mair.  If Candlemas’s day be wet and foul. The half o’ winter gane at Yule.

 The English version is:-

If Candlemas Day be fair and bright Winter will have another fight.  If Candlemas Day brings cloud and rain Winter will not come again.

The service starts at 9:30am and everyone is welcome.

SUTTON AND BARNBY MOOR WI: The ladies of the Sutton and Barnby Moor WI met in the Village Hall as scheduled on Wednesday 20th January another good turn-out for the group with two visitors present on the night.

Fiona Pagdin took the chair in the absence of President Jackie Payne. Notts Federation Advisor Ann Marie Morley was present for the evening to offer help and advice if required, and promote recruitment and advise members regarding official posts that may become vacant in the future.

The speaker for the evening was Ray Goodburn who addressed the members on delights of a trip from “Moscow to St. Petersburg”. The talk included reference to all the great Russian leaders, Historical buildings, not forgetting the Kremlin, moving from Communism through the Cold War period to capitalism, and the changes experienced by the Country and its people. The talk, accompanied by a Power Point presentation, was warmly accepted by the gathering and was followed by a question and answer session.

A very enjoyable and informative evening.

BURNS SUPPER: When the fourteenth Annual Burns Supper took place in the Village Hall on Saturday 23rd January all allocated places were filled. Once again the hall was tastefully decorated with the tartans of the many Scottish clans. The Scottish Standard and the Saltire were also on display.

On arrival the guests were greeted with a skirl of the pipes, courtesy of local piper Andy Jones and invited to join in a sherry reception, the ladies receiving a sprig of Heather. After a formal welcome and the usual health and safety brief, the gathering were asked to stand for the Selkirk Grace prior to the starters being served. This was conducted by Gail Bradley chief hunter for the evening.

Chairman Frank Bradley gave the usual warm welcome and outlined the evenings programme.   Guest speaker for the evening was Graham Bonnyman who recited many Burns poems and reiterated many anecdotes and historical facts about Scotland and details about the bard himself.

The Haggis was piped in by Andy Jones and delivered to the top table by the catering staff where it was duly addressed by the chief hunter. Diners were upstanding to toast the Haggis, the piper and chef being offered the traditional libation. A few words about the Bard himself followed, outlining his greatness, if only for a few short years, but still remembered the world over today.

Diners continued to enjoy an excellent meal provided by Joan Goodman and team (J G Catering). After the meal and during a short break for teas and coffees interrupted by an odd news Flash. Certificates were presented those attending a Burns Supper for the first time here at Sutton.

A grand raffle and more banter took the event nearer a close when resident piper Andy Jones played a short medley of tunes for those present.

One of the guests for the evening, Sue Benson, gave the gathering a rendition from the Scottish Song Book accompanied by audience participation, and later in the evening the village’s very own songstress Carole Head agreed to sing for those present.

Well done to both ladies!

A vote of thanks was given to all those who helped in any way the piper brought the evening to a close with an another offering from the Bard himself ,“Auld Lang Syne, which is sung at the end of events all over the world.

This brought a very enjoyable evening to a close¸ celebrating fourteen consecutive years of Burns nights here in Sutton, and thinking about the next.

Many of the guests opted to remain in the hall and socialised after the main event was over.

The Burns supper once again proved to be a great success, mainly due to the efforts of the organisers and friends who gave of their time so freely to make it so.

The format for the supper was arranged and coordinated by Sharon Dyson with support from the Burns Team, the village hall committee and loyal friends.

The estimated sum of £550 raised by the event is destined for Village Hall funds.

Thanks go to all who assisted in any way.
