ST.BARTHOLOMEW’S CHURCH: At the local church on Sunday 6th October “Holy Communion” will be held.

The service starts at 9:30am and everyone is welcome.

COLD CALLERS: Nottinghamshire County Council’s Trading Standards team have received reports of two vulnerable local residents being targeted by cold callers claiming they needed guttering work carrying out. In both cases large sums of cash were demanded up front and in one case guttering was removed and fascias damaged. Both residents were persuaded to go to the bank to obtain cash.

Trading Standards never recommend employing a trader based on a cold call and urge residents to be particularly wary of traders who knock at your door claiming that you need building work carrying out. If you are considering having work carried out on your property it is suggested that householders obtaining three quotes from reputable traders before entering into a contract. Where possible ask friends or family for recommendations of tradesmen. Alternatively you can contact Checkatrade for details of trades people who have demonstrated their commitment to fair and honest trading at www.checkatrade.com or by telephoning the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 04 05 06.

LAFF-A-LOT: Hopefully the first of a regular event, the Gate Inn hosted a stand up comedy night last Friday that was compered by the one and only Spikey Mike. The pub was packed out  to hear 3 comedians starting with a squeaky voiced Canadian and followed by a Jack Dee styled stand up from Hull. Headline act was a totally wacko musical duo. Jaws were truly aching at the end of the night.

SUTTON SPOTLIGHT: The latest edition of the Spotlight arrived at some homes over the week-end others will arrive in the next few days. Once again a well-received publication with a slightly different format from previous issues, but still containing valuable information, and details of forth-coming events.   The Spotlight is funded by the Parish Council but produced and distributed by volunteers. Thanks to all concerned.

MEET THE NEIGHBOURS: The “Neighbours” group will meet again on Tuesday 11th October at the Gate Inn at the usual time of 1:00pm. The menu on this occasion will be Sausage and Mash and seasonal vegetables. This is your chance to dine out and socialise in convivial company whilst catching up on all the news and views from in and around the area for only £5.00 per person.

PARISH COUNCIL MEETING: The Parish Council will meet on Wednesday 12th October in the Village Hall at the usual time of 7:00pm. The Chair and Councillors invite you to join them as they discuss local affairs which may affect you. Everybody welcome.

HALLOWEEN PARTY: A Halloween party is being organised by the Village Hall committee. The event will take place on Saturday 29th October in the Village Hall. There will be the usual Halloween activities and fancy dress of course, with prizes for the best fancy dress outfits.

Entry is free!! Bring your own food. Bar will be open.

PIMP YOUR PUMPKIN: To coincide with the Halloween Party, the Village Hall Committee have come up with another idea. Pimp your Pumpkin – decorate the street with your pumpkins. Open to all householders, again prizes for best decorated pumpkins. Chance for mums and dads to show the kids how it used to be done.

JAZZ NIGHT: The Village Hall Committee have been busy trying to organise various events to take place in the Village Hall over the coming months. Still away off but well worth noting in your diaries, especially Jazz Lovers, the committee have secured the services of Edinburgh based Ian Millar and Dominic Spencer, a jazz saxophonist and piano duo who are gaining rave reviews as they go from concert to concert up and down the country.

The event has been arranged for Friday 21st October. Tickets for the evening are £10.00 and a licensed bar will be available. Tickets are now available from Mavis Bradley in the village on (01777) 705 060.

DOG TRAINING: Dog training sessions are starting shortly in the Village Hall. This is a 6 week course starting on 31st October at a cost of £56.00 per dog. Puppy training will commence at 6:00pm to 7:00pm with general obedience following at 7:30pm to 8:30pm.

COMPUTER CLUB: Now that WI-FI is available at the Village Hall it is hoped to run a computer course at the venue. Computer Sessions are being held from Monday 14th November from 1:00pm until 3:00pm at a cost of £5.00 per person, payable at the event.

DICKENS CHRISTMAS SPECIAL: The Village Hall committee have persuaded local resident Judith Hedley to produce another Food and Fiction evening in the Village Hall. This will take place in December and details will be announced nearer the time.

Many local residents will remember the previous successful presentation of “Tea with Mr. Darcy” and this Christmas special should prove to be just as popular.  Don’t miss it!

VILLAGE HALL COMMITTEE MEETING: The hall committee met in the Village Hall on Tuesday evening, 28th September, at the usual time of 7:30pm and a load of ideas came up for discussion.

Planning details for the new kitchen were reviewed and agreed and will progress in due course. The group are working on other ideas on the approach to Christmas. The Seasonal Draw will once again take place. A tree lighting ceremony and the coffee morning with festive flavour will all feature in the run up to Christmas, plus many other ideas.

QUIZ NIGHT: Quiz night at the gate last Sunday saw the Worksop posse pick up the £15 prize. Play your cards was not won although Brian chose to accept a top line deal and walk away with £30. Prize next week is still £100 and the quiz will be an eighties themed music quiz for a £15 prize.

Another quiz on Sunday night, usual starting time of 8:00pm for more cash prizes.
