CREMATORIUM UPDATE: Westerleigh, the development company behind plans to build a new crematorium at Babworth, says its plans are already gaining the support of the public. This is in contrast to those of Memoria whose planning application to develop at Barnby Moor was submitted last month without a public consultation.
Westerleigh’s crematorium would be built at Babworth off the A620 straight mile between Retford and Ranby. The company says it looked at alternative sites, including the one at Barnby Moor for which Memoria has applied for permission, but it rejected that site as unsuitable.
Westerleigh unveiled its plans at a public exhibition on 9 March in Retford Town Hall.
“We are a socially responsible company and we always hold a public exhibition before submitting our plans,” said Westerleigh’s Mr Bucknell.
The meeting went ahead as scheduled with over 150 people attending throughout the day. The Bassetlaw district has never before been served by a local crematorium. The nearest crematorium is at Ollerton, which is more than a 30 minute drive for a funeral cortege for many families, a long distance on what is already a distressing day. When the facility is built, 77,000 people will live within 30 minutes of a crematorium for the first time.
Westerleigh says their new crematorium will provide opportunities for less hurried funeral services and reduce waiting times. Many families often have to wait weeks to get a slot for a funeral, especially at this time of the year, and the new crematorium is expected to reduce waiting times for local families.
Westerleigh operates 24 crematoria, and a small number of cemeteries, across England, Scotland and Wales and hosts over 30,000 funerals a year.
The Group has particular experience in developing new crematoria, having built sixteen in the last two decades and with six more due to open this year.
