New Heritage Asset

A new building in our Parish has just been added to the Non-Designated Heritage Asset register maintained by Bassetlaw District Council.

Items of historical significance were discussed during a recent meeting of the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group, and the pillbox in “Bunker Wood” was mentioned. After bringing it to the attention of BDC, it has now been added to their NDHA register.

A map of all Assets can be found here

Name: WW2 Pillbox at Sutton cum Lound

Date: 1940-1942

Description: ROF-type WW2 Pillbox, square plan with access corridor attached, of brick construction with cast concrete upper. Wide rectangular embrasures (slots) gave a large field of fire for the occupants. Likely constructed as part of the outer perimeter defences around the Ranskill Royal Ordnance Factory (ROF) which was built in 1940-1942 primarily to manufacture cordite, located approximately 1 mile to the north-west. Also located close to the River Idle, which gives the site additional strategic importance.

Historic and architectural interest.

Association, Rarity, Representativeness.

Sutton And Barnby Moor Gardening Club

Donation

Before the start of the meeting proper, local Councillor Darrel Pulk called in to present the group with a cheque for £200 to assist the club in their quest to arrange speakers for future meetings. The Councillor also supports other groups under his care as part of his efforts to support the community at large. A vote of thanks go to the Councillor for his support and interest in the group and its activities.

Meeting

A good turnout for the first meeting of the New Year with 33 members present when the club met on Thursday 9th January in Sutton Village Hall. The speaker on this occasion was none-other than our very own Jenny Bailey (Chairperson of the group) who would address those present on the subject of “First Aid for Garden Injuries”. This very informative talk and demonstration was taken on board by the gathering, as one never knows when or how these things happen. Prevention being better than cure showed the dangers lurking in our gardens as stepladders and wheelbarrows are not returned to their usual resting/storage places, rakes, spades and other sharp implements also causing problems that may have been avoidable. Over-reaching from ladders or platforms when hedge cutting or shrub trimming is the cause of many garden incidents with casualties resulting in requiring treatment, the more serious needing medical attention or in worst cases hospitalization. Despite all the warnings, protective clothing advice is often ignored; should advice be followed, many other injuries might have been avoided. The speaker also demonstrated the proper use of slings and support for arm/shoulder injuries, with a member of the group present assisting on the night.

The next meeting of the club is on Thursday 13th February, when Helen Higgins will tell members the benefits of aromatherapy from the garden.
