ST.BARTHOLOMEW’S CHURCH: On Sunday 1st February, a “Candlemass Service” will take place at the local church.
The English name, “Candlemas”, refers to the custom of blessing and distributing candles and carrying them in procession before the mass. The light of the candles is symbolic of Christ as the light of the world, to stick to tradition all the candles should be made of beeswax.
An ancient Scottish rhyme tells us:-
If Candlemas day be dry and fair,
The half o’ winter to come and mair.
If Candlemas’s day be wet and foul.
The half o’ winter gane at Yule.
The English version is:-
If Candlemas Day be fair and bright
Winter will have another fight.
If Candlemas Day brings cloud and rain,
Winter will not come again.
The service starts at 9:30pm and everyone is welcome.
VILLAGE HALL COMMITTEE: The Village Hall Committee has had to postpone their meeting scheduled for Wednesday 28th January 2015 until further notice due to unavailability of members on the original date.
SUTTON GARDENING CLUB: On Tuesday 3rd February the Gardening Club will meet at the Gate Inn at 7:15pm. Members will hear from Jill McMaster of Morton Nurseries who will give an informal talk/workshop based on a selection of plants on display. Members old and new always welcome.
MEET THE NEIGHBOURS: The Meet the Neighbours group held their first meeting of the New Year in The Gate Inn on Tuesday 13th January at 1:00pm. A group of 37 people made the effort and turned up at the venue to enjoy a communal lunch.
PARISH COUNCIL: An extraordinary Parish Council meeting took place on Thursday 22nd January in the Village Hall at 7:00pm. A full Council was present along with 25 members of the public. District Councillor Tracey Taylor was in attendance for advice and guidance if required.
The meeting was called to enable Councillors to discuss in detail the proposal of the Neighbourhood Plan which, if acceptable, will give the group more say in local planning and development matters.
BURNS SUPPER: When the thirteenth Annual Burns Supper took place in the Village Hall on Saturday 24th January all sixty allocated places were filled. Once again the hall was tastefully decorated with the tartans of the many Scottish clans. The Scottish Standard and the Saltire were also on display.
On arrival the guests were greeted with a skirl of the pipes, courtesy of local piper Andy Jones and invited to join in a sherry reception, the ladies receiving a sprig of heather. After a formal welcome and the usual health and safety brief, the gathering were asked to stand for the Selkirk Grace prior to the starters being served. This was conducted by Gail Bradley chief hunter for the evening, a task she has carried out for the full thirteen years.
After the first course, chairman Frank Bradley gave the usual warm welcome and outlined the evenings’ programme, assisted by fellow Scot Graham Bonnyman. The Haggis was piped in by resident piper Andy Jones and delivered to the top table by the catering staff where it was duly addressed by the chief hunter. Diners were asked to be upstanding to toast the Haggis, the piper and chef being offered the traditional libation. A few words about the Bard himself followed, outlining his greatness, if only for a few short years, but still remembered the world over today.
Diners continued to enjoy an excellent meal provided by Joan Goodman ( J G Catering). Certificates were presented those 21 people attending a Burns Supper for the first time here at Sutton. District Councillor Tracey Taylor and Husband Simon were amongst the 21 new people supporting the event.
A grand raffle and more banter took place interrupted by an odd humorous tale or piece of prose, local resident Carole Head sang from her Scottish song book. One written by Burns himself and another with audience participation was well received on the night. A short medley of tunes was played by the piper.
A final toast was proposed to the immortal memory of Robert Burns Scotland’s most famous Bard. Graham Bonnyman told more tales, some true – others left to the imagination.
The piper brought the evening to a close with another offering from the Bard himself “Auld Lang Syne” which is sung at the end of events all over the world. This brought a very enjoyable evening to a close¸ celebrating thirteen consecutive years of Burns nights here in Sutton, and thinking about the next.
The Burns supper once again proved to be a great success, mainly due to the efforts of the organisers and friends who gave of their time so freely to make it so.
The format for the supper was arranged and coordinated by Sharon Dyson and the local Burns Team with support from the Village Hall Committee and loyal friends.
The estimated sum of £775 raised by the event is destined for Village Hall funds
Thanks go to all who assisted in any way.
